The Fluorescence!
In mushrooms is a fascinating phenomenon where certain ones emit light when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, such as from a black light. The absorbed energy excites the electrons in these molecules, temporarily boosting them to a higher energy state.
This light emission is not the same as bioluminescence, where organisms produce light through chemical reactions in the dark. Instead, fluorescence occurs when molecules within the mushroom absorb UV light and re-emit it as visible light.
