🐊🌿 Two Spectacled Caimans in La Fortuna!

A fantastic wildlife encounter during one of our tours in La Fortuna, Costa Rica! 🇨🇷📸 We were lucky to observe these two Spectacled Caimans (Caiman crocodilus) quietly resting in their natural habitat.

Spectacled Caimans are one of the most widespread crocodilian species in Central and South America. Their name comes from the bony ridge between their eyes, which gives the appearance of a pair of “spectacles.” 👓🐊

They are important predators in tropical wetlands and waterways, feeding on fish, amphibians, crustaceans, insects, and other small animals. 🐟🐸🦀 They are also excellent swimmers and can remain remarkably still while waiting for the right opportunity to hunt.

Often overlooked because of its nocturnal habits, this fascinating marsupial plays an important role in the ecosystem, helping with seed dispersal and feeding on a wide variety of foods. 🐾🌱🪲

Every new species we photograph is a reminder that there is always something unexpected waiting to be discovered in the forests around us. 💚🌎

Today, August 15th, Costa Rica celebrates Mother’s Day 🇨🇷❤️, and nature gives us the perfect reminder of what motherhood means.

These beautiful moments show a mother Resplendent Quetzal carefully feeding her young at the entrance of the nest cavity. 🐦💚 A tiny life depending on her care, protection, and dedication.

Just like human mothers, wildlife mothers work tirelessly to give their babies the best chance to grow and thrive. 🌿✨

🪶 A Young Boat-billed Heron in the Wild! 🌿

One of those special encounters that reminds us how much life is happening around us. 💚

This juvenile Boat-billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius) was spotted quietly exploring its surroundings, already showing the characteristic oversized bill that gives this fascinating species its name. 👀🪶

As they mature, their plumage and facial features become even more distinctive. Boat-billed Herons are mainly nocturnal and are often found around wetlands, rivers, mangroves, and forested waterways. 🌙🌿

Every sighting of a young bird is a beautiful reminder that the next generation of wildlife is growing right before our eyes. 🐣✨

🐝🕷️ Tarantula-Hawk Wasps: A Fascinating Predator of the Rainforest 🌿📸

A fascinating photography session with Tarantula-Hawk Wasps! 🤩🐝 These impressive wasps are among the most remarkable hunters in the tropical forest.

The females actively search for tarantulas 🕷️🌿, and after finding one, they sting and temporarily paralyze it. But here comes the truly fascinating part… 👀

Instead of simply eating the tarantula, the wasp uses it as a living host for her larva. 🐝🥚➡️🕷️ The larva develops by feeding on the paralyzed spider, eventually completing one of the most incredible predator-prey relationships in the rainforest. 😮🌱

Their brilliant colors, powerful wings, and impressive size make them an amazing subject for photography. 📸✨

The rainforest is full of stories like this, where survival, reproduction, and evolution are happening right in front of us. 🌎🌿🔬

🌙 A Rare Canopy Encounter: Crested Owls 🦉

A special moment during our Hanging Bridges Walk! 🌿 We spotted a couple of Crested Owls (Lophostrix cristata) high up in the rainforest canopy.

These secretive nocturnal hunters are not always easy to find, especially during the day when they are resting quietly among the dense foliage. Seeing two together was already an incredible encounter, but this sighting is even more special because, so far, this is the only photo we have of this species from our tours! 📸✨

The rainforest canopy always has surprises waiting for us. You never know what might be looking back from above! 🌳🦉

💜✨ A Fairy Finally Decided to Stay Still! ✨💜

A few days ago, we had a very special encounter with a female Purple-crowned Fairy (Heliothryx barroti) 🧚‍♀️🐦 in a garden area.

This was actually the first time we've had the chance to record one perched! 📹😍 These little hummingbirds are usually constantly flying, feeding, and moving from flower to flower, making them incredibly challenging to photograph while sitting still.

But this time, we got incredibly lucky! 🙌 She paused on a perch and gave us the opportunity to capture both video and photos of this beautiful hummingbird.

💜 Without a doubt, the highlight of the day!

While the rainforest slowly comes alive, this beautiful Striped Owl (Strix virgata) has the perfect Sunday plan: sleeping in! 😂🌙

Spotted peacefully resting during the daylight, hidden among the vegetation and saving its energy for another night of hunting. 🌿✨

Sometimes wildlife knows exactly how to enjoy a Sunday: rest, recharge, and stay cozy! 🦉💚

🦥🤎 Meet the sloth that doesn’t get nearly enough attention!

Everyone knows the famous Three-toed Sloth, but did you know that Costa Rica is also home to the Hoffmann’s Two-toed Sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni)?

This shaggy, brown sloth is often overlooked, but once you see that adorable piglet-like face and long, shaggy hair, it’s hard to forget! 🐷🦥🤎

Unlike the Three-toed Sloth, this species has two claws on its front limbs and is generally more active at night. 🌙🌿

And the best part? You don’t have to travel far to find one. Hoffmann’s Two-toed Sloths can also be seen around La Fortuna, quietly moving through the tropical forest canopy. 🌳🦥

Not as famous… but definitely just as fascinating! ❤️
