Metamorphosis at Manakin.

Nature has moments that last only a heartbeat. This Lithobates warszewitschii neonate is in full transition; if you look closely, the remnants of its tail reabsorption are still visible.

It is a privilege to document these biological processes at Manakin Waterfalls. Having this level of biodiversity “in our backyard” is the direct result of a project that truly prioritizes habitat conservation. Grateful for the access to this paradise of water and life!

How would you breathe if your life depended on moisture?

Sometimes, during my night tours, people ask me why I stop to stare at the ground. The answer is this: the Bolitoglossa robusta.

It’s easy to be dazzled by a Quetzal, but for me, this salamander is one of the most extreme animals in Monteverde. Imagine this: it’s the largest of its kind, yet it has no lungs. Not a single one. Every bit of oxygen it needs to stay alive is absorbed through that glossy skin you see in the photo.

If the temperature rises just a couple of degrees or the forest’s humidity drops, it simply stops breathing. It is that fragile and that tough, all at once.

That is why, when we are invited to specialist surveys (like the 3rd Costa Rica Amphibian and Reptile Count), we don’t go just to check a box on a list. We go to check the “pulse” of the forest. If we find the robusta, it means the forest is breathing well.

If you come to Monteverde, remember that nature isn’t only in the treetops; sometimes, the magic is right there at your feet, hidden in the leaf litter, waiting for someone with enough patience to see it.
