The Bribis (CR Aboriginal) tale about this beautiful bird (motmot) says ...

When the god Sibú (represented as a vulture king) asked all the creatures to help him create the world, they all helped him, with a exception, our friend the motmot boldly dug a hole in the ground and hid from work, but luckily for him he inadvertently left his tail peeking out of the hole....

When the other working creatures saw this, they became angry and ripped off all of their plumage except the tip of their tail.

When the world was completed, the motmot began to boast about the amount of work he had done. But the god Sibu saw the tail of the motmot and guessed the truth... he cursed him and banished him to live in a hole in the ground.
