The Nicoya Peninsula is one of the most fascinating—and historically important—regions of Costa Rica. Today, people know it for spectacular beaches, small coastal towns, surfing, cattle ranches, and the famous Blue Zone. But its story goes back thousands of years.
🌿 Long Before Costa Rica
Long before the Spanish arrived, the peninsula was home to Indigenous peoples. One of the most important groups was the Chorotega, who migrated south from what is now Mexico and established themselves throughout the Nicoya region.
The Chorotega developed sophisticated agricultural communities and were known for their pottery, stonework, trade networks and agricultural practices.
Nicoya was an important cultural center, and archaeological discoveries throughout the peninsula—including distinctive ceramic artifacts—provide evidence of these ancient societies.
🏹 The Arrival of the Spanish
The Spanish arrived in the region in the early 1500s. In 1523, explorer Gil González Dávila traveled through the area during his expedition along the Pacific coast of Central America.
The Spanish encountered a well-established Indigenous population in Nicoya. The region eventually became part of the Spanish colonial system, and the town of Nicoya became an important political and religious center.
One of the peninsula's most important historic buildings is the Iglesia de San Blas de Nicoya, whose origins date to the colonial period. It is generally regarded as one of Costa Rica's oldest churches.
🇨🇷 The Peninsula Changes Countries
Here's one of the great historical twists of Nicoya:
The Nicoya Peninsula wasn't always part of Costa Rica.
Following independence from Spain in 1821, the territory known as the Nicoya Party had strong connections with both Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
On July 25, 1824, representatives of Nicoya formally voted to annex the territory to Costa Rica.
That decision is celebrated throughout Costa Rica every July 25 as the Anexión del Partido de Nicoya.
You'll often hear the famous phrase:
“De la Patria por nuestra voluntad.”
—“Of the homeland by our own choice.”
The anniversary is one of the most important regional celebrations in Costa Rica.
🐎 The Guanacaste Era
Over the following century, the culture of the region developed its own distinctive character.
Horses, cattle ranching, sabanero (cowboy) culture, marimba music, traditional dances, colorful festivals and agricultural traditions became deeply associated with Guanacaste and the Nicoya region.
The peninsula remained relatively isolated compared with San José and the Central Valley.
And that isolation helped preserve many traditions.
🌊 From Remote Peninsula to Tourism Destination
For much of the 20th century, many communities on the peninsula were small, rural and difficult to reach.
Then came roads, electricity, airports and—eventually—international tourism.
Places such as Tamarindo, Nosara, Sámara, Montezuma and Santa Teresa transformed from relatively obscure coastal communities into internationally recognized destinations.
Real estate development and tourism brought enormous economic changes, along with new challenges involving development, water resources, environmental protection and preservation of local culture.
💙 And Then Came the Blue Zone
Perhaps the most remarkable chapter in the modern history of Nicoya is its recognition as one of the world's Blue Zones—areas where unusually high numbers of people live to very old ages.
Researchers have identified several characteristics associated with longevity among older residents, including strong social connections, physical activity, traditional diets, family relationships and a sense of purpose.
The Blue Zone story has turned Nicoya into something much bigger than a tourist destination.
It has become a place that people around the world study when they ask:
“What can we learn from people who live long—and live well?”

What makes the peninsula particularly fascinating is that ancient and modern Costa Rica exist side by side.
You can visit an archaeological site, eat traditional Guanacastecan food, watch a marimba performance, see a sabanero on horseback, and then drive to a beach town filled with surfers and international visitors—all within the same region.
The Nicoya Peninsula isn't simply a place with beautiful beaches.
It is a place shaped by Indigenous civilizations, Spanish colonization, independence, migration, cattle ranching, agriculture, tourism and an extraordinary cultural identity.
And perhaps that's the real Pura Vida lesson of Nicoya:
Some places don't simply change with time. They absorb the past, carry it forward, and somehow remain themselves.
