On we celebrate this friend that is so special to us! 🐸

The Golfo Dulce Poison Dart Frog (Phyllobates vittatus) is endemic to the South Pacific of Costa Rica, meaning that it does not inhabit any other place in the world. Unlike other frogs that inhabit our forests, this little friend (3cm long) is more active during the day than at night. And although it is shy, you can find it under leaves or hiding in the crevice of a rock or root near a stream or body of fresh water, like this one we found near the Tigre River. Something we love about this frog is that the males carry their tadpoles on their backs, in a kind of bag, to carry them to small pools of water where they can grow.

Unfortunately, this species is highly endangered, mainly due to habitat fragmentation and water pollution.

🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸

¡No!

~~~~~~~~~~
Here are 3 facts you may not know about the common potoo (Nyctibius griseus):
🪵 During the day they perch upright in dry trees, camouflaging themselves perfectly.
🪺 They do not build a nest, the female lays a single egg that she deposits in a hollow of a dry branch or a wooden post. The egg is incubated for approximately 33 days, by the male during the day and by the female during the night.
👻 In Spanish they are known as "pájaro estaca" (stick bird), "Pájaro fantasma" (ghost bird), "pájaro bruja" (witch bird) , among others.
This weekend in Corcovado we found this group of larvae or worms that “jump” synchronously when they hear a sound. This is something that happens frequently in the bark of trees. This seems to be a defense mechanism, by jumping all at the same time they try to look like a single large animal and thus scare away their possible predator. 🐛💚 Have you ever seen with this worms?
