A Family Adventure Through the Mangroves of Costa Rica 🇨🇷
After a powerful early-morning storm and heavy rain, the water was carrying sediments and had turned a golden-brown color. Rather than stopping the adventure, it gave us another opportunity to observe how dynamic and connected this ecosystem really is.
They were excellent kayakers and often paddled ahead of me as we explored the mangrove channels and crossed two natural shortcuts through the forest. Along the way, we encountered an incredible variety of wildlife, including Boat-billed Herons, a Yellow-crowned Night Heron, male and female Bare-throated Tiger-Herons, White-faced Capuchin Monkeys, Green Iguanas, Kingfishers, Ibises, and many other species.
We paddled all the way to the island, where the mangrove forest meets the Pacific Ocean—a spectacular place to appreciate the connection between freshwater, estuaries, mangroves, and the sea. 🌊🌿
🔬 A little science behind the adventure
Mangroves are much more than trees growing in saltwater. They are highly productive coastal ecosystems that act as natural filters between land and ocean. Their complex root systems slow water movement, trap sediments, stabilize shorelines, and provide nursery habitat for fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and countless other organisms.
They are also important Blue Carbon ecosystems, capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing carbon in their biomass and, especially, in the waterlogged sediments beneath the forest. This makes mangroves extremely valuable in the global fight against climate change.
The muddy or brown water we observed after the storm is also part of the natural connection between the watershed and the coast. Mangrove forests can intercept and retain a significant portion of these sediments before they reach coastal waters.
For us, kayaking through the mangroves is not simply about seeing wildlife. It is about understanding the living system behind the wildlife.
And today, this family experienced it together—with adventure, science, nature, and plenty of smiles. ❤️
