Starting a business in a foreign country is not for the faint of heart.

Matty from Paddle 9 sits down and gets real about what it actually took to build an adventure tour company from the ground up in Costa Rica as an outsider.

Five of the most difficult animals to spot anywhere in Costa Rica.

The Silky Anteater. The world’s smallest anteater. Known in Spanish as the Serafin del Platanar which translates to angel of the banana plantation, rooted in the indigenous belief that it guides souls of the dead to heaven. About the size of a grapefruit when curled up. Nocturnal. Lives high in the jungle canopy. Almost never seen.

The Mangrove Hummingbird. An endangered species found nowhere else on earth. Restricted entirely to mangrove sites on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Blink and you miss it.

The Unspotted Saw-whet Owl. So rarely encountered that for most of Costa Rica’s birding history it was a complete mystery. Even seasoned birders who have searched for years come home empty handed. It only comes out at night and only in the highest mountain forests.

The Bush Dog. One of the most secretive and least studied mammals in all of Central America. Looks like a cross between a dog and a weasel. Moves in small packs through dense jungle and almost never reveals itself to human eyes.

The Harpy Eagle. The most powerful and largest predatory bird in the Americas with talons as big as the claws of a full grown bear. Most believed these giants had been completely lost from Costa Rica until a single adult was photographed in the north of the country and made national headlines.

Costa Rica holds 6.5% of the world’s biodiversity in one small country. And some of it does not want to be found.

Before anyone jumps at Paddle 9 the depth gets checked. Every single time. No exceptions. No assumptions.

It does not matter if you jumped this exact spot yesterday. It does not matter if you were here last week, last month or last year.

Water moves. Rocks shift. Conditions change. And in cliff jumping what you do not know can hurt you.

The sport of cliff jumping is one of the most exhilarating experiences nature has to offer. It is also one that demands absolute respect for the environment you are jumping into.

Depth checks are not a formality at Paddle 9. They are a non negotiable standard that happens before every single guest approaches that ledge.
