Somewhere between 360 and 529 meters below the Pacific, off Costa Rica's seamounts, a robot submarine found a coral that grows like a golden tree out of a carpet of brittle stars.

It was so different from every known coral that scientists had to create a brand new family for it. Then they named it in Elvish. Laurinque elenya — "golden tree" and "of the stars," from the language Tolkien invented for The Lord of the Rings.

Found near our Isla del Coco and described by a team led by a researcher at the Universidad de Costa Rica.

Today was a nice hike through Talamanca. We hiked for a couple of hours and still have so much more to see. There are 10 waterfalls on the property. It is a great alternative to hiking Chirripo.

The Chirripo River...... I am a amazed at the amount of water that runs down this river everyday. Parts of this country are experiencing water rations and droughts.

This little waterfall is just below the Agua Termals (Hot Springs) at the base of Chirripo Mountain in San Gerardo de Rivas.
