Walking past a local school this morning and a reminder that September has arrived in Costa Rica.

This is el mes de la patria, when flags start appearing everywhere ahead of Independence Day on September 15. Schools in particular get into the spirit, and over the next couple of weeks there’ll be plenty more red, white, and blue appearing around the country, as well as the sounds of bands practicing for the parades on the big day.

Call it one of those very Costa Rican signs that tells you exactly what time of year it is! 🇨🇷🇨🇷🇨🇷

In this age of ride sharing apps, you can be forgiven for thinking that taxis don’t matter anymore, and to some extent, you’ll be correct, especially outside of the larger cities.

But if you’re in rural areas, including a lot of tourist destinations, Uber can be pretty thin on the ground and if you’re looking to get from your hotel to someplace and you don’t have a rental car, you might need a taxi.

In New York you get yellow cabs. In London you get black ones. Here in Costa Rica, official taxis are red with a yellow triangle on the side. They come with meters (“marias”) and you should always ask the driver to activate it before the ride starts (“toca la maría por favor”).

Our itineraries include transportation between destinations within Costa Rica and you might find yourself in an area with Uber if that restaurant is a too far away from the hotel or vacation rental to walk. But you also might not, and that’s where these guys come in.
