To accomplish this, they have long toes on their rear feet with fringes of skin that unfurl in the water, increasing surface area. As they rapidly churn their legs, they slap their splayed feet hard against the water, creating a tiny air pocket that keeps them from sinking, provided they maintain their speed. They can move along the surface like this for 15 feet or more. When gravity eventually does take over, the basilisk resorts to its excellent swimming skills to continue its flight.

Several stone spheres of the Diquís exhibited at Museo Nacional de Costa Rica. For comparison purpose, the image on the wall shows the diameter of the biggest recorded stone sphere, 2.66 metres (8.7 ft)

The spheres range in size from a few centimetres to over 2 metres (6.6 ft) in diameter, and weigh up to 15 tons.[3] Most are sculpted from gabbro,[3] the coarse-grained equivalent of basalt. There are a dozen or so made from shell-rich limestone, and another dozen made from a sandstone.

They appear to have been made by hammering natural boulders with other rocks, then polishing with sand. The degree of finishing and precision of working varies considerably. The gabbro came from sites in the hills, several kilometres away from where the finished spheres are found, though some unfinished spheres remain in the hills. They are used for decoration.

WHAT DOCUMENTS NEEDED TO TRAVEL TO COSTA RICA-Fill out the electronic epidemiological HEALTH PASS form, available at https://salud.go.cr.
RT-PCR diagnostic test with a negative result; the sample must have been taken within 72 hours of travel to Costa Rica.
Passengers coming from the U.S. must show through their driver’s license or state identification (State ID) that they live in one of the 20 authorized states. This requirement excludes children travelling with their family.
