Among all the species of hummingbirds in Costa Rica, the White-tipped Sicklebill (Euroxeres aquila) has the most incredible adaptation of coevolution with just some specific species of flowers. The bill of this hummingbird has a sickle-shaped curvature of nearly 90 degrees. Due to this the bird can feed on flowers that other species barely can. One more time Nature show us how natural selection works and how it can create jewels like this one!

The Surfbird (Calidris virgata) makes one of the most incredible journey of the Western Hemisphere. From Alaska to Tierra del Fuego in Argentina, the Surfbird flies over the Pacific coast every season, a distance of more than 17 500 km and the winter range extends inland only a few meters above the tide line, making this journey the longest and narrowest of any North American breeding bird. As their name implies, Surfbirds are usually found in the surf or spray zone, a place where I’m pretty sure the bird enjoy to be, don’t you think??🤙🏝😃

The Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) is a prehistoric-looking stork found it around the Neotropical region. Its name comes from a word in a Tupí-Guaraní language, meaning swollen neck. Males are larger than females and they suppose to be monogamous, which means they have only one partner during their lifetime. After you see these pictures, do you still thinking dinosaurs got extinct?? 🤨

Among all the families of birds, hummingbirds are perhaps the most unique. Undoubtedly they owe their fame to their extreme smallness no less than to their exquisite glittering plumage and unrivaled skill in flight. The family represents the second most diverse of the Western Hemisphere and it contains the smallest bird in the World. In Costa Rica the family has 52 species and they lie in different ecosystems, from the dry forest and the mangroves to the timberline and the paramo habitat. The Collared Peccary also knows as the javelina is one of the 255 species of mammals reported in Costa Rica. According to different studies, it seems that peccaries are wonderful seed disperser. They are able to feed on different species of plants, including Dumb cane (Dieffenbachia), a plant with high concentrations of toxic calcium oxalate crystals. Almost no other vertebrates, or even insects, feed on this type of philodendron, nevertheless the peccaries evolved a very unique way to can eat it without problems. A herd contains from a few to 30 individuals, and when a female gives birth, the young join the herd on the next day. The most interesting part for me was to see how the adults protected this baby, when they were startled by something, four adults surrounded the young one until the intruder disappeared. A wonderful way to understand how important is to protect your loved ones and see that Nature, besides wild, can be full of love.
