At Be Local, we are exploring how travellers can engage more meaningfully with the people and projects already working to protect and strengthen the places they visit.

Financial support matters.

But where appropriate, the relationship can go further.

🌿 Participating in workshops or practical activities
🌿 Learning directly from the community
🌿 Creating genuine exchange rather than simply observing from the outside

Projects such as Jardim do Mira in Portugal show how restoration, education and community engagement can become part of a deeper understanding of a destination.

The aim is not to turn travel into volunteering.

It is to create opportunities for learning, participation and connection.

Because regenerative travel should not only ask what tourism can contribute to a place.

It should also ask what travellers can learn from the people already caring for it.

🌿 What are we actually trying to protect when we travel?

A destination is more than scenery.

It’s the café where locals meet.
The small producer working with local ingredients.
The neighbourhood where everyday life still happens.
The traditions that belong to the community.
The rhythm of a place before it becomes something created mainly for visitors.

At Be Local, we believe meaningful travel should help preserve the things that made us curious about a destination in the first place.

Support local.
Travel slowly.
Respect the place.
Leave room for real life.

Because perhaps the most important question is:

Will this place still feel like itself after tourism has passed through it?

🌿 A local encounter should be more than another stop on the itinerary.

Meeting a farmer, artisan, producer or family-run business can be one of the most memorable parts of travelling.

But only when there is time for a real exchange.

At Be Local, we believe meaningful encounters should be:

🌿 Long enough to understand the person behind the story.
🌿 Fairly valued, so local people benefit from sharing their time and knowledge.
🌿 Connected naturally to the place — rather than staged simply for visitors.

Regenerative travel should create value beyond the traveller.

For us, that means looking carefully at where the value of each journey goes.

🌿 Choosing locally rooted accommodation whenever possible.
🌿 Working with independent producers, artisans and family-run businesses.
🌿 Creating small-group encounters where local people are fairly compensated for their time and knowledge.
🌿 Travelling outside the busiest periods, helping spread demand more evenly throughout the year.
🌿 Connecting each journey, where possible, with a local NGO, conservation project or community initiative already doing meaningful work on the ground.

The aim is not to arrive in a destination and decide what it needs.

It is to listen first, understand what is already being done locally, and find respectful ways for our presence to contribute.

There is something about Portugal’s Atlantic coast that naturally invites us to slow down.

That feeling inspired The Ocean Within, our slow travel journey along the Rota Vicentina.

At Be Local, we want travellers to experience a destination more deeply — while making sure the places we visit benefit from our presence too.

THE LIVING FOREST 🌿
Asturias, Spain

Some places are not meant to be rushed.

Asturias is one of them.

For our second Be Local journey, we wanted a destination where nature sets the rhythm — ancient forests, green mountains, small villages, local traditions and the wild Atlantic never too far away.

The Living Forest is about experiencing Asturias slowly.

Walking without needing to hurry.
Meeting people connected to the land.
Sharing local food.
Listening to stories.
Finding moments of silence.
And allowing enough space for the journey to unfold naturally.

We’ll travel in a very small group, outside the busiest season, working with local people and supporting social and environmental initiatives along the way.

Because for us, travelling more consciously isn’t about seeing less.

🌿 Meet our first experience: The First Silence

La Palma + El Hierro | Canary Islands

Two islands shaped by fire, ocean and time.

Our journey begins among the forests, volcanic landscapes and small communities of La Palma, before continuing to El Hierro — remote, elemental and wonderfully unhurried.

But The First Silence isn't simply about discovering two beautiful islands.

It's about how we choose to experience them.

🌿 We travel in very small groups, creating space for genuine relationships with our Journey Host, local people and one another.

🌿 We stay in locally owned or carefully selected accommodation that reflects the character of the places we visit.

🌿 We seek out local producers, independent businesses and meaningful encounters that keep more of the value of travel within the destination.

🌿 We aim to collaborate with a local NGO or community initiative, allowing each journey to contribute in a small but tangible way to the islands that welcome us.

🌿 And we deliberately leave space for walking, contemplation and simply being present — without feeling the need to fill every hour.

Small groups allow us to go deeper: to listen, to ask questions, to share a table and to develop a more meaningful connection with the people and landscapes that shape these islands.
