¿Iguana o Garrobo? Green Iguana or Spiny Iguana?
It´s common that people tend to get a confused when come to distinguish these lizards. Although both are in Sta. Teresa, it´s just a matter of checking some characteristics to tell them apart. Green iguanas (Iguana iguana) has a couple of big notorious scales at the height of the jaw, while the Garrabo (Ctenosaura similis) has smooth scale all around the throat. On the other hand, the Garrabos, also named Spiny Iguana or Black Iguana, has several lines of spines on their tail while Iguanas don´t. Also male Iguanas turn red-orange color when they are going to mate and Garrobos become light turquoise. In town Garrobos are more common than Iguanas, probably because they are omnivores and also the FASTEST LIZARD ON EARTH, being harder to prey for the bunch of dogs in town. We have tons of wildlife still on our neighborhood, it´s a matter of taking a minute to hear and watch what’s nature doing around!!
Muchas veces la gente llega confundirse cuando aparecen las Iguanas. Aunque existen ambas en Sta Teresa, es solo cuestión de prestarle atención a un par de detalles para distinguirlas. Las Iguanas tienen un par de escamas grandes a la altura de la quijada, mientras que los Garrobos tienen todas sus escamas lisas en la garganta. También las Iguanas cuando se van a aparear se tornan en un rojo anaranjado, en cambio los Garrobos se tornan turquesa. En el pueblo es mucho más común ver Garrobos que Iguanas, talvez porque los garrobos son omnivoros además de que los las lagartijas más rápidas en el planeta, pudiendo así escapar más eficazmente de la manada de perros que hay en la vecindad. Todavía tenemos una cantidad de fauna salvaje en el barrio, es solo cuestión de detenerse para observar y escuchar la naturaleza alrededor!!
