- 1980- Paddling the first kayak I ever made myself on the West River in Vermont, age 16. See the epoxy/ phenolic microballons end pour through the fiberglass. See how straight my legs are in this boat and how small the cockpit is. My Protrek helmet, 1/4" thick wetsuit top, 210cm Hurka paddle (I weighed 110 pounds), and Omega life jacket.... Yes, I am dead vertical, which is how I liked my boat to be and I hung out there at the "ender hole" for hours if I could until my dad said I had to go. This is my second year with a good ender/pirouette. I was addicted to them and it set the stage for my freestyle career that is still happening today. Last night I paddled solo at Rock Island at 2 generators in the main hole doing trick after trick with nobody watching. Just the incredible feeling of working with the water and getting your boat and body to do cool flips, twists, and some upside down in the washing machine time too. Compared to most sports where a crash causes pain and injury, playboating crashes are just fluffy water 99% of the time. If my 16 year old self seen here could have seen me paddling last night, he would have been blown away. Nothing like that existed in 1980. I would have gone home and made my first short freestyle boat had I realized how much you can do in one. There is still something special about the super long, high volume boat enders, however, like this shot. But, you would know if it was more fun than the playboat as I would be paddling one quite often. | Sarapiquí albergará el Intrepid Challenge como parte del ECOFEST 2026

El cantón de Sarapiquí será sede del Intrepid Challenge, una reconocida competencia de trail y carreras con obstáculos que se llevará a cabo el próximo 3 de octubre, como parte de las actividades del ECOFEST 2026.

La confirmación del evento se dio tras una reunión entre los organizadores de la competencia y representantes locales, quienes destacaron la importancia de que Sarapiquí continúe consolidándose como un destino para el turismo deportivo y de aventura.

Se espera la participación de atletas provenientes de distintas partes del país, quienes llegarán al cantón para enfrentar el reto en un entorno caracterizado por su riqueza natural, lo que permitirá proyectar a Sarapiquí como un escenario de primer nivel para este tipo de competencias.

Además del impacto deportivo, la actividad también representa una oportunidad para dinamizar la economía local. La llegada de competidores y sus acompañantes favorecerá a hoteles, restaurantes, sodas, comercios y emprendimientos de la zona, fortaleciendo el encadenamiento turístico y comercial del cantón.

La organización del evento cuenta con el respaldo de la Municipalidad de Sarapiquí, el Comité Cantonal de Deportes y Recreación de Sarapiquí y la Cámara de Turismo de Sarapiquí, instituciones que trabajan de forma conjunta para garantizar el éxito de esta actividad.

Los organizadores informaron que en las próximas semanas se darán a conocer más detalles sobre la competencia, recorridos e inscripciones.
