The history of Costa Ricas money (colones)

The story of Costa Rica’s money is as colorful and beautiful as the country itself. Every coin and bill carries history, culture, and a deep sense of national pride.

🌿 The Costa Rican Colón

Costa Rica’s official currency is the Costa Rican colón, named after Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón in Spanish). It was introduced in 1896, replacing the Costa Rican peso. The name honors the explorer who arrived on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast during his fourth voyage in 1502.

Before the colón, Costa Rica used several currencies during the 1800s, including the peso and even foreign coins from Spain, Mexico, and other nations. Trade was growing—especially coffee exports—and the country needed a stronger, more unified monetary system.

🏛 The Birth of National Banking

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, private banks issued their own banknotes. Eventually, Costa Rica centralized its monetary system, and in 1950 the Central Bank of Costa Rica (Banco Central de Costa Rica) was established. From that point forward, the Central Bank became the sole issuer of currency, strengthening financial stability and national identity.

🦋 The Art and Nature on the Bills

Costa Rica’s money is famous for its breathtaking design. Modern colón banknotes celebrate:

Wildlife like sloths, monkeys, sharks, butterflies, and hummingbirds

Rainforests, coral reefs, and mountain ecosystems

Important historical figures and scientists

For example:

The 1,000 colones note features a hummingbird.

The 5,000 colones note highlights a blue morpho butterfly.

The 10,000 colones note features a sloth.

These designs reflect Costa Rica’s global reputation for biodiversity and conservation. The bills are colorful, vibrant, and almost feel like miniature pieces of art celebrating Pura Vida.

🪙 Coins Through the Years

Colón coins have evolved over time as inflation and economic changes occurred. Older coins featured national symbols such as the coat of arms. Today’s coins remain practical but still carry elements of Costa Rica’s identity.

💵 The U.S. Dollar in Costa Rica

While the colón is the official currency, the United States dollar is widely accepted, especially in tourist areas. Real estate, rentals, and some larger transactions are often quoted in dollars, reflecting Costa Rica’s strong ties to international trade and tourism.

A Reflection of Pura Vida

Costa Rica’s money tells a story. It honors explorers, celebrates democracy, showcases wildlife, and reflects economic growth rooted in coffee, bananas, tourism, and sustainability.

Hold a colón in your hand, and you’re not just holding currency — you’re holding a small, beautiful symbol of a peaceful nation that chose education over an army, nature over excess, and community over conflict.

That’s the true beauty behind Costa Rica’s money.

Oxcarts — called carretas in Costa Rica — are one of the country’s most recognizable cultural traditions. Their history is closely tied to agriculture, especially coffee, and they played a major role in shaping everyday life during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Coffee and the need for transportation

In the mid-1800s, coffee became Costa Rica’s main export crop. Farmers in the Central Valley had to move heavy sacks of beans across rough mountain trails to Pacific ports like Puntarenas. Roads were muddy, steep, and often barely passable, so sturdy wooden carts pulled by oxen became the most reliable solution.

These journeys were slow. A trip to the coast could take days or even weeks. The carts had thick wooden wheels designed to handle mud and rocks, and the oxen were valued partners — strong, patient animals that farmers cared for deeply.

Everyday life with oxcarts

Before trucks and trains arrived, oxcarts were the backbone of transportation in rural Costa Rica. They carried:

Coffee, sugarcane, and farm products

Families traveling to town or church

Construction materials and household goods

In many communities, owning a well-built cart and a healthy team of oxen was a sign of stability and pride.

From plain wood to colorful art

Originally, the carts were simple and functional. In the early 1900s, families began decorating them. What started as small touches of color evolved into elaborate designs with bright geometric patterns, flowers, animals, and landscapes.

Each region developed distinctive styles, and artisans — especially in towns like Sarchí — became famous for their craftsmanship. Some people even said each cart had its own “voice” because the wooden wheels made unique rhythmic sounds as they rolled.

Modern changes

With the arrival of railways, paved roads, and motor vehicles in the 20th century, oxcarts gradually disappeared from daily transportation. But instead of fading away completely, they transformed into cultural symbols.

Today they appear in:

Festivals and parades

Folk art workshops

Tourist displays and rural celebrations

They’re widely seen as a symbol of hard work, creativity, and the agricultural roots of Costa Rica.

A lasting symbol

The brightly painted oxcart represents more than transportation. It reflects the country’s coffee heritage, rural traditions, and artistic spirit. Even though modern vehicles replaced them long ago, the tradition remains alive through craftsmanship, celebrations, and national pride.
