Costa Rica’s official currency is the Costa Rican colón, named after Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón in Spanish). It was introduced in 1896, replacing the Costa Rican peso. The name honors the explorer who arrived on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast during his fourth voyage in 1502.

From that point forward, the Central Bank became the sole issuer of currency, strengthening financial stability and national identity.
