Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) in Tortuguero: Science, Ecology & Responsible Sportfishing
The tarpon — Megalops atlanticus — is one of the most iconic species in the Caribbean. Known for its silver morphology, explosive jumping ability, and remarkable muscular strength, this fish can grow over 2 meters in length and exceed 100 kg in weight.
In Tortuguero, tarpon presence correlates strongly with ecological factors such as:
🔹 nutrient-rich river outflow at the river mouth
🔹 warm Caribbean temperatures
🔹 brackish mixing zones where fresh and saltwater interact
Peak activity occurs from September to November, when prey availability and tide conditions enhance feeding behavior. March to June also offers productive conditions.
From a biological perspective, tarpon are notable for their dual respiratory capacity: they possess fully functional gills yet can also breathe atmospheric oxygen using a vascularized swim bladder — a major evolutionary advantage in low-oxygen environments.
In Tortuguero, we promote a catch & release approach to protect their ecological role as apex predators in coastal systems. Barbless hooks, careful handling, and minimizing air exposure are key to reducing stress and improving post-release survival.
Key locations include the Tortuguero river mouth, adjacent channels, and lagoon systems.
