Costa Rica and our zone are home to thousands of dogs and cats. During your visit here you will see many pets on the beaches and streets. They may look homeless, but please understand that it is common here for people to let their pets run free, with or without collars. Unless the dog or cat is clearly hungry or in need of medical attention it is better to leave them, unless you are able to keep them and care for them until you can find them a permanent home.

To truly rescue an animal, you need to not only take them off the streets, but to provide them or find them a permanent home.
Rescue organizations are overwhelmed by requests and not always able to help due to many constraints such as space, financial situation, lack of volunteers, adopter and fosters to help care for the animals, etc.

The pet situation here may be very different to what you are used to where you come from and may be upsetting to some but resist the temptation to intervene unless you plan to provide a permanent solution. Please do not exclusively rely on a rescue organization to help you with an animal you pick up. They are most likely already helping in several other cases.
