Hiperderecho is a Peruvian NGO working to promote human rights in digital environments. They believe in technology as a tool for personal and collective freedom and work towards keeping public policy aligned with that purpose.

With more than 60% of Peru’s 31M strong population connected to the internet, they’ve been the main non-profit driving a mission on how the digital environment constitutes a space for the exercise of human rights and what actors and trends could endanger those rights. Since 2012, they’ve been spending their time driving digital policy influence and advocacy, critical internet research, technology development, and activism and community education within Peru among other things.

Digital rights are a human right and the need to support that mission could not be more pressing, especially in Peru and Latin America. We’re extremely proud to be partnering and supporting Hiperderecho.

Introducing Heroínas Peruanas, one of our four NGO partners for our trip to Peru in March.
Heroínas Peruanas is an incredible non-profit whose goal is to enhance the image of Peruvian women and fight gender blindness through children's stories about female Peruvian heroes. Their first book, ‘20 Heroinas Peruanas’, was published in 2018 and was an instant hit.
To further drive awareness to their fight against gender blindness, they have also partnered with several children-based institutions to share their stories and materials; for each book purchased, another is donated to similar institutions.
We’re honored and grateful to be partnering with a non-profit that is moving the needle forward on a pressing societal issue.

Did you know that Costa Rica has no official national lifeguard program? Pretty surprising for a country with hundreds of miles beaches and their fair share of dangerous rip currents.

With a major need to provide a public service, social impact champion and entrepreneur founded Guardavidas Costa Ballena, a lifeguarding service and non profit providing essential lifeguarding services across three main beaches in the district of Bahía Ballena (southwest Costa Rica). To date they’ve saved thousands of lives and continue to serve as an invaluable safety piece to their region. Despite their amazing work, the Costa Rican government and surrounding Municipalities provide limited funding to help their cause. In some cases, financial commitments are made by government Municipalities, but payments get delayed for months at a time (6 months or longer), leaving the organization cash strapped and without the funds to staff their guards on the beaches. This creates a dangerous situation, putting tourists and locals at risk of incident on the beaches.

Tomorrow we start our most ambitious project to date. We’ll be partnering with a management consulting firm to bring 20 professionals to paradise. A customized sabbatical - focused on working with local NGOs to help them solve complex business problems, leadership development, and some cultural immersion. We’re humbled, grateful, and so excited to bring this experience to life.

As we take the next steps with The Weekend Sabbatical and reflect on the past year, it’s easy to forget about the steps we had to take to get to this point. Some were tiny, some huge, others painful. But the most important lesson learned remains top of mind.
-
There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.
-
Onwards we go, one step at a time.
