Legend has it that in the 19th century, the owner wanted to name it after the nearby church.
The church didn’t agree, and the sign couldn’t be left blank.

So the owner put up a “?” as a temporary solution. But… the question mark has remained there for more than two centuries!

Legend has it that Đura Jakšić, the famous Serbian painter and poet, once created a painting that captured a lively scene from a local kafana.

The artwork became so popular that the kafana itself ended up being named after his painting, forever linking Jakšić’s art to the bohemian spirit of Belgrade.

It’s said that visitors would come not just for the drinks, but to see the scene that inspired Jakšić and soak in the same atmosphere he had captured on canvas.

Leave a comment if you know which kafana got its name from a Đura Jakšić painting 👇

During his official visit to the United States in 1971, Tito was a guest of U.S. President Richard Nixon at the White House.

Tito was known for: his luxurious lifestyle, his confident presence among world leaders, and — of course — his Cuban ci**rs, which were part of his image.

According to diplomatic accounts and later memoirs, during the informal part of the meeting Tito took out a cigar and lit it, even though the White House already had fairly strict protocol and smoking restrictions at the time.

Nixon’s reaction was neither scandal nor anger — on the contrary: he reportedly smiled and handled the situation diplomatically.

Long before modern streets shaped the city, the Stambol Gate stood as the main entrance to Belgrade — a monumental passage facing the road to Constantinople (Istanbul), which gave it its name.

Today, no grand arch remains — only subtle traces in the landscape and old maps that remind us where it once stood.

Our first stop on the Free Downtown Tour and the Free 20th Century Tour is Republic Square!
