The first written record of the name Belgrade dates from April 16th, 878. In a letter to the Bulgarian ruler Boris I, Pope John VIII referred to the local bishopric as Episcopatus Belogradensis, the Bishopric of Belograd. The name literally means ‘White City.’

Fun fact: there is no "Kalemegdan Fortress." The official name is Belgrade Fortress, while Kalemegdan is the park around it. Together, they create a stunning complex of more than 60 hectares, an incredible symbiosis of history and nature, and without a doubt the heart and soul of Belgrade.
Separated by name but inseparable in reality! 🙂
