The tomato gose is a style that is particularly popular in Russia. With the large number of Russians now in Serbia, there are many more varieties available of this brew in the craft beer bars.

True Crime is a nanobrewery operated by a Russian in neighboring Montenegro. The brewer has contributed to the tomato gose love with his Richard Chase. This tomato gose is infused with Habañero peppers, making it especially spicy at the beginning. It feels thick like tomato soup and has flavors of green veggies and umami soy sauce.

As far as I know, True Crime Brewing is only available now at Bruno Bar in Belgrade and Drunk Octopus Bar in Herceg-Novi, Montenegro.

In Serbian language, 'za poneti' means 'to go' or 'takeaway.' If you liked a beer on tap at the bar in Belgrade and want to enjoy it again at home, try ordering a Liter of 'pivo za poneti.'

Arator Brewery is located in Senta, a small town in the north of Serbia. They make a great juicy NEIPA, the Monkey. A sweet vanilla aroma leads to a brew heavy with flavors of pineapple, mango and coconut. The finish is slightly, with an easy 5.6% ABV.

I bought this Liter of Monkey NEIPA for takeaway at my local craft bar in Vracer, Belgrade, called Pivski zabavnik.

At 1,492 meters above Serbia, on Tornik Mountain, Zlatibor's highest peak, I didn't expect to find craft beer. But Dogma Brewery was there - their whole portfolio - in K2 Caffè on the mountaintop. After many years, Dogma's Hoptopod remains one of Serbia's best classic IPAs. Always crisp, fruity, bitter, and even more refreshing when it's a beautiful day on top of the world.

If you're going to have a birthday in Berlin, better have a Berlin original - The Berlinerweisse. Brauerei Lemke makes this beer as it should be; with brettanomyces, salt and absolutely no fruity syrups!

A kafana in a village at Avala was not the place I expected to find crafty beer. But the Avalsko Pale Lager did the job. Brewed by Guliver Brewery in the nearby town of Ripanj, it is one of several small breweries in Serbia that have joined "craft beer" after the big movement.

The beer is fine, malty and bitter, yet it seems American Pale Ale might be a better description of the beer rather than lager. It went well with excellent food at Karadordev Konak after a long hike up Avala.

Beer Fountain (Pivo Česma) in the wilderness of Rožanstvo, near Zlatibor, Serbia. Sadly, the beer bottle only produced water, but the surrounding view was wonderful.

If you like bacon-flavored water, come to Poland and get their traditional beer, Grodziskie. Known as the "Champagne Among Beers," it uses Grodzisk water, yeast, 100% smoked-dried wheat malt and local Tomyski hops to produce its unique flavor.

There are many versions of Grodziskie in Poland, but this is the original from Browar Grodzisk. It's meaty and bitter, but still light and carbonated. Ideally, it should be served with foam in a tall Pilsner style glass. If you like German Rauchbier, but want something more drinkable, this is it.

Super Hazy IPAs have fallen out of fashion. Now lagers and pilsners are on top. Sometime soon they will meet, and we will have the West Coast Pilsner. This brew goes by other names - some may say it's an Italian Pilsner. Either way, it's surprising.

St. Louis's Narrow Gauge Brewing Company has the Alchemize, a West Coast Pilsner with Nelson Sauvin. It starts out like a classic Czech Pilsner with grass and lemon. There's some floral and citrus notes. It finishes really hoppy, almost like an IPA. Strange, but a cool new beer.

Dilemma Brewery is in the town of Pančevo, near Belgrade, Serbia. Their selection is limited in Belgrade, but in and around Pančevo they offer a wide variety of special brews.

At the Slaninijada Kacarevo (Bacon Festival) in Kačarevo, they had a stand with Sabro IPA on tap. This full sweet beer, with coconut and melon flavors, was very popular with our visiting tour group. .rs
