When in Valjevo, we drink Valjevsko Pivo. After a month of fruited sours, savory sours, and pastry stouts, I'm happy to enjoy a normal, clean, crisp national beer.

Valjevo, Serbia, is a beautiful little city that sits at the confluence of the Kolubara and Gradac rivers. There are many peaceful cafes on the shores of these rivers, and all of them serve fresh Valjevsko Pivo. The brewery itself is next to the Kolubara River, and its little museum store is a great place to learn about the city and this classic Serbian beer.

Yes, I know it's not a craft beer, but your average Serbian brewer probably drinks this crisp boy all the time

Zbir pivara / 3Bir brewery & Taproom of Novi Sad, Serbia, has released some interesting series lately. Serbian Delight is their newest series featuring big beers with local sweets in them and can art of famous Serbian landmarks.

Serbian Delight: Marzipan is a heavy Russian Imperial Stout with a nice flavor of marzipan. It tastes of grapenuts cereal, caramel and light chocolate. The aroma isn't strong, but the taste is a little sweet for me. Still, at 10.2% ABV, it's best not to take this beer lightly.

The art on the can is Ðavolja Varoš, or Devil's Town. These naturally occurring rock towers are in the Southernmost part of Serbia.

Have you had enough fruit sours? Try a savory sour instead.

Serbia's Mehanika Brewery has made a tomato sour called, simply, Pizza. The name, like the aroma, is on the nose. It smells of pepperoni, salt, and loads tomatoes. It has a heavy sauce feel, like what you would spread on pizza. There's hints of oregano, basil, salt, and more tomatoes. Serve with a side of garlic bread if you can.

Enjoyed on tap at the new Beersheep Garden in Belgrade. Summer is coming, and the weather's fine outside.

Is it a beer? I find it difficult to call any fruit smoothie sour a real beer, but it is delicious fruit juice. Just-Ice is part of Croatia's Pulfer Brewery Smoothiesh series.

This is literally overflowing with fruit pieces, chunks, juice or whatever. There's blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and I suspect snozzberry in it too. Despite this maniac mix, it all stays balanced and not annoying. A slight tartness finishes this up. Use a napkin when you drink it.

Perhaps part of my joy of walking the streets with a beer in hand comes from living in Dogtown, Saint Louis. The Ancient Order of Hibernians are an organization that keeps Saint Patrick's Day traditions alive in this neighborhood of 1st and 2nd generation Irish-Americans.

We had many a craft beer at a friend's house for a tasting on this lovely Tuesday, March 17th. But a Saint Patrick's Day on the streets of Dogtown is best enjoyed with a Guinness in hand and a flask of whiskey in the pocket. Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Slovenia stopped distributing in Serbia a few years ago. It's nice to see that they came back with a bomb. That bomb is Clef Brewery, which shows promise for a relatively new place.

Initially, I was worried about a brewery doing gimmicky music-themed beers with a long list of pastry sours. But Thriller Pastry Sour actually works because it tastes like what is written on the can.

An aroma of passion fruit and orange rind sauce poured over vanilla cake starts it. It doesn't taste like sugary, but like acid citrus. As it warms, real fruit tastes of peaches and mango come out. It has body like a fruit smoothie.

When we heard, Samo Pivo, Belgrade's oldest craft beer bar, was closing last year, we were sad. Fortunately, it was just moving.

The new Samo Pivo open at Cetinjska 15, one of Belgrade's most popular nightlife districts. Almost nothing has changed. There's still over 20 taps, plenty of bottles to choose from, and a large patio that will be open in the warmer months.

One thing that did change though - they finally take credit cards. Drink up! Vidimo se u Samo Pivo.

BeerSheep has been the shop for the largest selection of craft beer in Belgrade, Serbia. The thing that they were missing was tap beer. As of this year, that has changed.

BeerSheep Garden opened on December 26th, 2025 at Kneginje Zorke 3, near the Saint Sava Temple. They have 30 taps and their usual large selection of foreign and national beers.

Trying to film when you know half the bar already is not ideal, but funny. Thanks for the "America, F**k Yeah!" shout out.

Gunners Pub celebrated its 10th year as one of Belgrade's first proper craft beer bars. They've been long-time collaborators with Crow Brewery, one of Serbia's major craft breweries. If you want to try Crow beer, you'll find it at Gunners Pub.

To celebrate Gunners Pub's 10 years, Crow made 3 new beers for them. Peacock 11 is their newest in a series of heavy IPAs. This one features a blend of 20% real mango and is single hopped with El Dorado. It's rich, yet dry and drinkable. Mango, lime, and apricot are full without heavy hop burn. It's hard to believe it clocks in at 8.5% Abv with these flavors.

Since anything can be a Christmas beer, I'll call this a Christmas present pivo.
