The Đetinja River Reopens: A Camping Trip for Grayling and Trout

The Đetinja River in Serbia is open for fishing again! After nearly nine months of “rest” — from October 2024 until July 8, 2025 — my friends and I wasted no time and set off on a long-awaited fishing trip. The plan was simple: tents, a campfire, roštilj, and of course — the pursuit of grayling and trout.

Part of our crew took the train from Belgrade to Stapari Station near Užice, while I drove with my family. We arrived on Friday evening, set up camp right by the water, and immediately started testing the local trout. The fish were active, showed interest in the fly, but remained cautious — not a single confident strike before nightfall. Later, we enjoyed dinner by the fire, grilled meat, and a night under the stars.

Early the next morning, we headed downstream — about 3 km from our camp — to a section known for holding grayling. And sure enough — the fish were active and eagerly took both dry flies and nymphs. We used small hooks, sizes 16–20, and the occasional trout showed up as well. One of Đetinja’s unique traits is the clear separation of species: above the waterfall — only trout; below — both trout and grayling. The waterfall itself acts as a natural barrier — grayling can’t get past it, unlike trout.

On Sunday, we had one more half-day session. The results were similar: each of us caught 10–20 fish, with great casts, beautiful water, and good company. Đetinja is a place you always want to return to. And we definitely will.

Река Джетинья в Сербии снова открыта для рыбалки! После почти девяти месяцев “отдыха” — с октября 2024 до 8 июля 2025 года — мы с друзьями, не теряя ни дня, отправились на долгожданную рыбалку. План был простой: палатки, костер, роштиль, и конечно же — охота за хариусом и форелью.

Часть нашей команды добралась на поезде от Белграда до станции Стапари (Ужице), а я с семьей поехал на машине. Приехали в пятницу вечером, разбили лагерь прямо у воды и сразу начали пробовать местную форель. Рыба была активная, интересовалась мушкой, но осторожничала — ни одной уверенной поклевки до темноты. Потом — ужин у костра, роштиль, ночевка под звездами.

На следующий день рано утром мы отправились вниз по реке — около 3 км от лагеря. Там находится участок, где живет хариус. И правда — рыба была активна, клевала азартно и на сухую мушку, и на нимфу. Использовали мелкие крючки 16–20 размера, иногда влетала и форелька. Особенность Джетиньи — чёткое разделение: выше водопада — только форель, ниже — и форель, и хариус. Сам водопад служит естественным барьером — хариус его пройти не может, в отличие от форели.

В воскресенье провели ещё одну полудневную сессию. Результаты похожие: на каждого по 10–20 рыб, прекрасные забросы, красивая вода и душевная компания. Джетинья — место, куда хочется возвращаться. Мы обязательно приедем сюда снова.

Fly Fishing on the Drina: In Pursuit of the Balkan Grayling

The Drina River is more than just turquoise water and a strong current. It’s a challenge—especially if you’ve set your sights on the local trophy grayling with a dry fly.

Recently, my fishing buddy Oleg and I ventured out on this demanding trip. Oleg’s no novice—his casting is confident, he reads the line well, and this time we both brought 5-weight rods with floating lines. The target was grayling living below the Perućac hydroelectric dam. The main productive zones are within 3–5 km downstream from the dam, but grayling can be found much farther downriver, even 20–30 km away.

This kind of fishing demands patience and complete focus. The flies are tiny—exclusively so. We were using dry CDC patterns starting from size 16 and smaller, and also some small nymphs. For two days straight, the fish were extremely cautious—no rises, no visible activity. The sun was blazing, and the water was crystal clear. Still, from time to time, we managed to get a few subtle takes—on dry flies. It seemed impossible in such heat, and that’s exactly what made it so rewarding.

The surrounding nature felt like a fairy tale. You could dedicate a whole post just to the scenery: morning mist, transparent water, greenery that looks painted. We rented a cozy cabin in Perućac, relaxed on the veranda after fishing with a view of the river, and were treated to some excellent homemade rakija by a local grandmother. Soulful and memorable.

The Drina isn’t for beginners. You need to match the hatch precisely, cast delicately, and read the water like a book. But if you’re ready for a demanding fishing experience and want to test yourself—welcome.

Нахлыст на Дрине: за балканским хариусом

Река Дрина — это не просто бирюзовая вода и мощное течение. Это вызов. Особенно, если вы решили охотиться за местным трофейным хариусом на сухую мушку.

Недавно мы с Олегом, моим товарищем по удочке, отправились на эту непростую рыбалку. Олег давно в теме, уверенно работает с забросом, чувствует шнур, и в этот раз мы оба взяли с собой пятерки с плавающими шнурами. Цель — хариус, что обитает ниже Перучацкой ГЭС. Основные рабочие участки — в пределах 3–5 км от дамбы, но хариус встречается и ниже по течению, на 20–30 км.

Эта рыбалка требует терпения и максимальной концентрации. Муха — исключительно мелкая. Мы ловили на сухие CDC-шки, начиная с 16 размера и мельче, также в ход шли мелкие нимфы. Два дня подряд рыба вела себя крайне осторожно — ни выходов, ни активности, солнце палит, вода кристалл. И всё же, время от времени, редкие поклёвки случались — именно на сухую мушку. Казалось бы, в такую жару это нереально, но именно в этом и кроется кайф.

Природа вокруг — как в сказке. Отдельный пост можно посвятить только видам Дрины: утренний туман, прозрачная вода, зелень, которая кажется нарисованной. Мы сняли уютный домик в Перучаце, отдыхали после рыбалки на веранде с видом на реку, а местная бабушка угостила нас отличной домашней ракией. Душевно.

Дрина — это не для начинающих. Здесь нужно точно подбирать муху, делать тонкий заброс, читать воду. Но если вы готовы к трудовой рыбалке и хотите испытать себя — добро пожаловать.

Fishing in Bosnia: Rivers Ribnik and Sana – Nature, Fish, and Adventure

We recently went on a fishing trip to Bosnia — an exciting journey along the Ribnik and Sana rivers. These rivers are rightly considered some of the most fish-rich waters in Europe. They’re teeming with grayling, rainbow, and brown trout, and the local conditions are perfect for fly fishing.

The drive from Belgrade took about seven hours. It’s not that far in terms of distance, but once you start winding through mountain roads, time slows down. Still, the scenery is absolutely stunning. Bosnia reminded me of Thailand — lush greenery everywhere, winding rivers creating unique landscapes.

We stayed in a wooden cabin that looked like something out of a fairy tale: natural timber, the scent of resin and pine all around. But there was an issue with hot water — it seems the boiler was on a budget. As per tradition, we didn’t shower for three days. I did take a dip on the first day to wake up after the road trip, but after that, who cares — waders dried out and back to the river we went.

As for the fishing, the fish weren’t particularly active this time. Despite clouds of flies and caddis buzzing above the water, the fish were acting oddly passive. The weather didn’t really work in our favor — we averaged about 15 fish per person over three days. Still, we managed to catch some rainbows, a few browns, and a handful of grayling.

That said, the overall experience was amazing. The local food deserves a special mention — hearty meals, lots of meat, and of course, the signature home-brewed rakija. In the evenings, we hung out with guys from other countries — we met Slovenians, French anglers, and even a Romanian. Everyone had their own stories, jokes, and fishing secrets.

Рыбалка в Боснии: реки Рибник и Сана – природа, рыба и приключения
Недавно мы отправились на рыбалку в Боснию — захватывающее путешествие по рекам Рибник и Сана. Эти реки заслуженно считаются одними из самых рыбных мест в Европе. Воды здесь богаты хариусом, радужной и ручьевой форелью, а местные условия идеально подходят для нахлыстовой рыбалки.

Дорога от Белграда заняла около 7 часов. Вроде бы не так уж и далеко, но когда начинаешь петлять по горным дорогам, время тянется. Однако природа там просто потрясающая. Босния напомнила мне Таиланд — буйная зелень повсюду, реки извиваются, создавая неповторимые пейзажи.

Мы поселились в деревянном домике, который выглядел просто сказочно: натуральное дерево, запах смолы и сосен вокруг. Но вот с горячей водой что-то пошло не так — видимо, бойлер решили экономить. По традиции, не мылись три дня. Я один раз искупался в первый день, чтобы хоть как-то ожить после дороги, а потом уже пофиг — вейдерсы высушили и снова на воду.

Что касается рыбалки, то рыба в этот раз не была особо активной. Хотя мушек и ручейников над водой летало тьма-тьмущая, рыба вела себя подозрительно пассивно. Нам не сильно повезло с погодой — за три дня по 15 рыб на человека. Но всё-таки удалось поймать радужку, браун траута и немного хариуса.

Тем не менее, впечатления остались отличные. Местная кухня — это отдельная тема. Сытные блюда, много мяса и, конечно, фирменная кувана ракия. Вечерами собирались с ребятами из других стран — встретили словенцев, французов и даже румына. У всех своя история, свои приколы и свои секреты рыбалки.

Recon After the Storms

Today, I decided to do some scouting on the Gradac River in Serbia, which was slightly murky after the recent storms. The water didn’t look great, and at first, I thought the fish wouldn’t be biting today. But as it turned out, I was wrong.

I decided to start with dry flies, as they often save the day in such conditions. And it worked! Right after the first few casts, I caught three fish in about fifteen minutes just below the Deguric dam. The fish were biting actively, but they weren’t the biggest ones, so I decided to move upstream to see what was happening there.

Since I have some fishing trips planned with clients this weekend, I decided to test two rods simultaneously — one with nymphs and the other with dries. Initially, I worked with small nymphs, but the results were disappointing — the fish were picky. The small nymphs didn’t perform as expected, and after several empty casts, I realized it was time to change tactics.

A thought crossed my mind: “What if I try something bigger?” So I did — I switched to large-profile nymphs. And that was the game changer of the day! The fish started actively responding to the big nymphs, especially in the slightly murky water. It’s amazing how sometimes the simplest solutions can bring unexpected results.

Throughout the day, I caught around ten fish of various sizes. Despite the drizzling rain, the mood was great. The air after the storm was fresh, and the river felt alive again. After the fishing session, tired but content, I decided to stop by “Skok po Skok.” Sitting on the veranda, drying off, sipping a cold beer, and replaying those successful casts in my mind — that’s one of the simplest yet unforgettable pleasures of a fisherman.

Now, I’m preparing for the weekend and wondering what else the Gradac River has in store for me. If the weather holds, large nymphs will be my main weapon. If not, I’ll adapt and look for new approaches. Fishing on the Gradac is never the same, and that’s its special magic.

Разведка после гроз
Сегодня я решил провести разведку на реке Градац в Сербии, которая после недавних гроз слегка мутновата. Вода выглядела не самым лучшим образом, и сначала я подумал, что рыба сегодня работать не будет. Но, как оказалось, я ошибся.

Решил начать с сухих мушек, так как часто они могут спасти рыбалку в подобных условиях. И это сработало! Сразу же после первых забросов я поймал три рыбы за каких-то пятнадцать минут ниже плотины Дегурич. Рыба брала бойко, но размером была не самая крупная, поэтому решил подняться выше по течению и проверить, как там обстановка.

Так как на выходные у меня запланированы рыбалки с клиентами, я решил сразу протестировать две удочки — одну с нимфами, другую с сухарями. Сначала работал с мелкими нимфами, но успеха было немного — рыба капризничала. Мелкие нимфы не показали себя так, как я ожидал, и после нескольких пустых забросов я понял, что пора менять тактику.

В голове возникла мысль: “А что если попробовать что-то крупное?” Так я и сделал — поставил крупные нимфы с более заметным профилем. И вот это было настоящее открытие дня! Рыба начала активно реагировать на крупные нимфы, особенно в мутноватой воде. Это удивительно, как иногда самые простые решения могут дать неожиданные результаты.

За весь день я поймал около десяти рыб разного размера. Несмотря на моросящий дождик, настроение было отличное. Воздух после грозы был свежим, а река — словно ожившая после шторма. После рыбалки, уставший и довольный, я решил заглянуть в “Скок по Скок”. Сесть на веранде, обсушиться, глотнуть холодного пива и пересматривать в голове успешные забросы — это ли не одно из самых простых и одновременно незабываемых удовольствий рыбака?

Теперь готовлюсь к выходным и думаю, что же еще может преподнести мне река Градац. Если погода не изменится, крупные нимфы будут моим главным козырем. А если нет — буду подстраиваться и искать новые подходы. Рыбалка на Градаце никогда не бывает одинаковой, и в этом её особая магия.

Mid-May on the Đetinja — Two Days of Fly Fishing and Pure Joy

In mid-May, we gathered a big group and headed to the Đetinja River. We decided to stay overnight and rented a cozy mountain house from Grandma Cana — just five minutes on foot from the river. An old wooden cabin with a wood-burning stove, peaceful silence, and a morning view of the mist over the forest — pure magic.

The weather was perfect. We spent the whole day targeting grayling, changing flies, wading through the current, laughing, and arguing about who out-fished whom. The fish were biting — not quite like Ribnik, where you can catch 30 a day — but everyone landed a grayling, and that’s what counts. There were strikes, misses, and some real fighters on light tackle.

In the evening, as always: a campfire, Balkan food, homemade rakija, and long talks with local fishermen. The Serbs welcomed us like old friends.

Đetinja in May is when nature is bursting with life, grayling are active, and every cast is filled with anticipation. We were more than happy — already planning the next trip.

Середина мая на Джетине — два дня флай-фишинга и кайфа

В середине мая собрались большой компанией и поехали на Джетиню. Решили остаться с ночевкой и сняли домик у бабушки Цаны — уютное гнездышко в горах, всего в пяти минутах пешком от реки. Старый деревянный дом, печка, тишина и вид на утренний туман над лесом — красота неописуемая.

Погода была шикарная. Упирались в хариуса весь день, меняли мушки, бродили по течению, смеялись и спорили, кто кого сегодня «переиграл». Рыба ловилась — не как на Рибнике, где по 30 штук в день, но каждый поймал своего хариуса, и это главное. Были и поклевки, и срывы, и настоящие бойцы на лёгкой снасти.

А вечером — как всегда: костёр, балканская еда, домашняя ракия и долгие разговоры с местными рыбаками. Сербы приняли нас тепло, как старых друзей. Джетиня в мае — это когда природа полна жизни, хариус активен, и каждый заброс — в предвкушении. Мы остались довольны и уже планируем следующую вылазку.

Fishing is not just a way to relax — it’s a great opportunity to spend quality time with your kids outdoors, away from screens and the hustle and bustle of the city. Fly fishing in Serbia is becoming increasingly popular among families looking for an active and educational experience. It’s especially suitable for children aged 7 and up.

Where do we fish?
We organize fishing trips in some of the most scenic areas of Serbia:
• Gradac River (Valjevo) – With its crystal-clear water, it’s ideal for catching trout and grayling. The gentle current and safe river access make it a great choice for kids.
• Drina River – One of the largest and most beautiful rivers in the region, perfect for targeting chub using classic fly fishing techniques or euro-nymphing.
• Other small rivers and streams – Available upon request, depending on the season and fish activity.

What do we do?
• Teach the basics of fly fishing: how to hold the rod, cast, and work the fly.
• Explain the fish species we’re targeting and why we practice catch and release.
• Go on a short hike, often with a picnic lunch by the river — sandwiches, fresh fruit, and lemonade.
• Outfit kids with light waders or rubber boots (depending on the weather) and set up a safe fishing area for them.

• Age: 7 and up. Younger children are welcome to join, but may not be able to actively participate in fishing.
• Parental presence is required — for safety and to share this memorable experience with your child.

Обучаем основам нахлыста: как держать удочку, как выполнять заброс, как вести мушку.
Объясняем про рыб, которых ловим, и зачем их отпускаем.
Устраиваем небольшой поход, часто с обедом прямо на берегу — например, сандвичи, свежие фрукты, лимонада.
Снаряжаем детей в лёгкие вейдерсы или сапоги (по погоде), обеспечиваем безопасную зону для рыбалки.
Важно знать
Возраст: от 7 лет и старше. Дети младше могут присутствовать, но не всегда смогут активно участвовать в ловле.

Присутствие родителей обязательно — как для безопасности, так и чтобы разделить с ребёнком этот уникальный опыт.
Всё необходимое оборудование предоставляем мы. Нужно только одеться по погоде и взять хорошее настроение!

Siberians on the Gradac River: A First Taste of Fly Fishing

Recently, I had the pleasure of guiding two clients from Siberia — Mikhail and Roman. Both are experienced anglers, but they’ve spent their whole lives fishing with spinning gear back home. This time, they wanted to try something new — fly fishing in Serbia.

We headed out for a one-day trip to the Gradac River, which flows through the town of Valjevo. It’s one of the most beautiful rivers in Serbia, with crystal-clear water and wild trout. Our morning started the local way: we stopped at a kafana, bought fishing licenses, enjoyed a shot of rakija, and followed it up with strong Serbian coffee — the perfect start to a fishing day.

We arrived near the monastery, geared up in waders, and set up the fly rods. Mikhail and Roman picked up the basics of fly fishing quickly — the casting, the drift, the fly presentation. The fish were shy that day, not very active, but Roman had plenty of takes using euro nymphing. Mikhail, on the other hand, was having a quiet morning — until just before lunch, when he hooked his first trout! Around 30 cm, beautifully spotted — and the smile on his face said it all.

We had lunch right on the riverbank: grilled mackerel over coals, a potato salad with nettles, and some traditional appetizers. Simple, rustic, and full of flavor.

We spent the rest of the day fishing. Time flew by. The guys absolutely loved the whole experience — the river, the fly fishing itself, and the vibe of the trip. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of many more adventures together!

Сибиряки на реке Градац: первое знакомство с нахлыстом

Недавно ко мне обратились два клиента из Сибири — Михаил и Роман. Парни опытные рыбаки, но до этого всю жизнь ловили исключительно спиннингом у себя на севере. Захотелось им попробовать что-то новое — и выбор пал на нахлыст в Сербии.

Мы отправились на реку Градац, что течёт через город Вальево — одну из красивейших рек в Сербии, с кристально чистой водой и дикой форелью. Утро началось по-местному: заехали в кафану, купили лицензии, выпили по ракии, заели крепкой кафой — чтобы день точно задался.

Добравшись до места у монастыря, переоделись в вейдерсы, снарядили удочки. Михаил и Роман быстро вникли в основы нахлыста — техника, забросы, поведение мушки. Рыба в этот день была осторожной, активность слабая, но Рома уверенно работал в евронимфинг-стиле и получил немало поклевок. Михаилу сначала не везло, но перед самым обедом — долгожданная форелька на 30 см! Радости было столько, будто это был трофейный хариус.

Обед устроили прямо на берегу: скумбрия, запечённая на углях, картофельный салат с крапивой и лёгкие закуски. Всё натурально, просто и вкусно.

После обеда продолжили рыбалку — день пролетел незаметно. Михаил и Роман остались в полном восторге: и от рыбалки, и от самой реки, и от всей этой атмосферной поездки. Надеемся, это была только первая из многих совместных вылазок!

Recently, my friend Dimka and I decided to embark on a small adventure—we traveled from Belgrade to Montenegro for some fly fishing. Our destination was the Lim and Luča rivers, which flow near Plav Lake. This area is renowned as one of the best spots for fly fishing in the region, and, spoiler alert, the trip turned out to be unforgettable.

In the morning, we loaded our gear into the car and headed towards Montenegro. The journey took several hours but passed quickly as we chatted about fishing and discussed strategies. Upon arrival, it was clear that autumn had fully set in. It was cool but bearable, and most importantly, dry flies were working excellently.

We weren’t new to this area; Dimka had last visited with his wife about ten years ago. The Lim River is wide and fairly fast, offering good spots for fly fishing. Its lesser-known but equally beautiful sister, the Luča River, boasts clear waters and excellent fish habitats. On the first day, we caught several graylings, each measuring between 30–35 cm. The fish were biting confidently, without hesitation, which greatly lifted our spirits. There were also some missed catches and near misses.

On the second day, we decided to explore new spots and moved a bit downstream. Conditions became more challenging—wind picked up, and the temperature dropped—but the fish continued to bite. That day, Dimka stood out by catching a trout. It wasn’t enormous but was quite spirited, providing him with a thrilling experience during the catch.

After fishing, we headed to a local restaurant recommended by residents. The atmosphere was incredibly cozy—wooden interiors, a fireplace, and the aroma of homemade food. We ordered local dishes and toasted to a successful day.

Overnight, frost set in, and by morning, everything was covered with a light frost. Sipping coffee in such cold weather is a unique pleasure, especially in good company. We visited the “Mozart” café, where we met Oki, Dado, and his friends. They are local chuváros and fly fishing guides who know these rivers like the back of their hands. Over cups of strong espresso and shots of rakija, we discussed fishing, gear, and our catches.

By evening, it had gotten even colder, and we had to admit that three days on the water had exhausted us, but it was a pleasant fatigue. The entire trip was perfect: excellent fishing, beautiful nature, new acquaintances, and, of course, the joy of the process itself.

On the way back, we were already making plans for the next trip. Perhaps next time we’ll try late autumn or even winter—who knows, maybe fly fishing in the snow will offer even more intense emotions?

Недавно мы с моим другом Димкой решили устроить себе небольшое приключение — отправились из Белграда в Черногорию на нахлыстовую рыбалку. Целью были реки Лим и Луча, протекающие возле Плавского озера. Это место считается одним из лучших для нахлыста в регионе, и, забегая вперёд, скажу — поездка получилась незабываемой.

С утра мы загрузили снасти в машину и поехали в сторону Черногории. Дорога заняла несколько часов, но пролетела быстро — болтали о рыбалке, обсуждали снасти и тактику. По приезде сразу стало понятно, что осень вступила в свои права. Было прохладно, но терпимо, и главное — сухая мушка работала отлично.

Мы не впервые в этих местах — Димка был здесь лет десять назад с женой. Река Лим широкая и довольно быстрая, есть хорошие места для ловли. Её менее известная, но не менее красивая «сестра» — река Луча — радует прозрачной водой и отличными стоянками для рыбы. В первый день мы поймали несколько хариусов — каждый по 30–35 см. Брали уверенно, без капризов, что сильно подняло нам настроение. Конечно, были и сходы, и холостые поклёвки.

На второй день решили поискать новые места и спустились немного ниже по течению. Условия стали посложнее — поднялся ветер, температура упала, но рыба продолжала брать. В этот день Димка отличился — поймал форель. Не огромную, но бойкую — поклёвка и вываживание принесли массу эмоций.

После рыбалки заехали в местный ресторан по рекомендации жителей. Атмосфера — огонь: деревянный интерьер, камин, запах домашней еды. Заказали местные блюда, чокнулись за удачный день.

Ночью подморозило, утром всё было в лёгком инее. Пить кофе в такую погоду — отдельное удовольствие, особенно в хорошей компании. Зашли в кафе “Моцарт”, где познакомились с Оки, Дадо и его друзьями. Это местные чува́ры и гиды по нахлысту — знают эти реки, как свои пять пальцев. За крепким эспрессо и рюмкой ракии обсуждали снасти, рыбу и рыбалку.

К вечеру стало совсем холодно, и мы с радостью признали, что три дня на воде нас измотали, но это была приятная усталость. Всё сложилось идеально — отличная рыбалка, красивая природа, новые знакомства и, конечно, радость самого процесса.

Обратно ехали уже с мыслями о следующей поездке. Может, в следующий раз попробуем позднюю осень или даже зиму — кто знает, вдруг нахлыст по снегу принесёт ещё больше эмоций?
