En 1955, el Presidente Batista promulgó la Ley de Hoteles 2074, ofreciendo disminución de impuestos, contratos del gobierno y licencias de casinoos a quien construyera un hotel que costara más de USD$ 1,000,000 o un club nocturno que costara USD $200,000 en La Habana. Dicha ley impulsó a Meyer Lansky y a sus socios a inundar la ciudad de hoteles y casinos.

El Hotel Capri fue el primero de varios que serían construidos. Ubicado en la Calle 21, entre N y O, Vedado, a sólo una cuadra del Hotel Nacional, abrió sus puertas en noviembre de 1957. Con 250 habitaciones, la edificación de diecinueve plantas fue uno de los mayores hoteles con casinos en La Habana en su momento. Posee una piscina en la azotea.

Propiedad de Santo Trafficante, Jr. de Tampa, Florida, el hotel/casino estaba operado por Nicholas Di Costanzo, Charles Turin (alias: Charles Tourine o Charley "The Blade"), y Santino Masselli del Bronx (alias:"Sonny the Butcher"). Tras su apertura, George Raft fue contratado para ser el anfitrión del club del hotel, mientras perteneció a los gánsteres. Se cree que poseía importantes intereses en el club.

El hotel fue diseñado por el arquitecto José Canavés y era propiedad de la familia Canavés. El hotel, junto con su famoso casino, fue arrendado al hotelero estadounidense, "Skip" Shephard. El Hotel Capri fue nacionalizado por el gobierno cubano en octubre de 1960. El casino fue clausurado en 1959.

El hotel se llamó Hotel Horizontes Capri en la década de 1990, hasta que fue cerrado en 2003. Fue reinaugurado en enero de 2014, tras una fuerte restauración siendo a partir de entonces operado por el grupo español NH Hoteles, bajo el nombre Hotel NH Capri La Habana.

La bebida denominada en inglés gin and tonic es un cóctel compuesto de ginebra y agua tónica servida con hielo, en unas proporciones sugeridas de 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 y 2:3. En otros países como Alemania, Argentina, Francia, Italia, México, Japón, Paraguay, Países Bajos y Turquía se refieren a ella como gin tonic. En países hispanohablantes se le llama gin-tonic, aunque en su uso en España se la considera una variación del gin and tonic tradicional servida con mayor cantidad de hielo y más aderezos acordes al tipo de ginebra utilizada y en copa balón, que permite apreciar más los aromas de la bebida.

TOUR CONTENT:

A guided city tour around Havana in deluxe convertibles or hard roof classic cars of the 1950's.

We begin the tour with a very special way to explore Havana for more than an hour, visiting the most interesting places in the Cuban capital from the seat of a classic American car from the 1950's. We start with a panoramic tour of the city by the Miramar district, Plaza de la Revolucion and the University of Havana, with a stop at the emblematic Hotel Nacional de Cuba .

The tour does not end here, after experience of old cars, prepare for a comprehensive walking tour of the historic center of Havana. This tour begins from a place considered by many to be the masterpiece of architecture in the country: the Capitol building. You will visit the Central Park of the city, making the most of your time to see the former Supreme Court of Justice, now home to a museum of fine arts; the only Hotel Inglaterra and the world-famous Grand Theater, home of ballet and opera in Cuba.
Later, enjoy a stroll along the main pedestrian street of Old Havana, Obispo, and experience the atmosphere of the city with street vendors, bars, artist studios and the famous Floridita bar-restaurant, among other emblematic places.
The final part of the walking tour will be dedicated to discovering the four main squares in the historic centre of Havana. We also visit another areas of Old Havana Historical Center declared by UNESCO as World Heritage from 1982. These are; the system of fortification surrounding the Havana's Bay!
