See those empty beaches you pass on the way out? Nothing built on them. No sunbeds. No people. That's not by accident. Right now, under that sand, thousands of turtle hatchlings the size of a matchbox are breaking out of their shells. They laid at the end of May - seven weeks of incubation - and this is the fortnight it all happens.

They come out at night, when the sand cools, and run for the sea in the dark. You won't see it from the deck. But it's worth knowing what you're looking at as you go past. 🐢

August on land, in Cyprus can be brutal. One hundred metres offshore, it isn't. Moving air, cool water, shade when you want it, and the whole Akamas coastline on one side with nothing built on it for miles. This is where you spend the hottest month of the year - not in a car park.
