For those who not only miss the great Malev but also the great Hungarian food, we would like to remind you that tonight and tomorrow night (24th of February) are the last 2 nights of the Hungarian Food Festival currently taking place at the Cyprus Hilton.

It's one of the few times us locals here in Cyprus have the chance to eat authentic Goulash soup cooked by Hilton Budapest's own cooks that arrived specifically for this event!

Dear Passengers, Dear Friends.

We would like to inform you that we have updated our Cyprus website with the different options our passengers have for refunds. Please have a look at http://www.malev.com.cy/node/63 to see what options you have available following the bankruptcy filling of the Malev Hungarian Airlines.

We hope to be around with better news in the near future.

Based on the Board of Directors' decision Hungary's National Airline ceased its operation to minimize its losses. According to this statement, after nearly 66 years of continuous operation, Malév aircrafts will not depart from 6 am 03 February.

03/02/2012

Dear Passengers, Dear Friends,

We hereby inform you that in order to minimize damages, the board of directors of Hungarian national carrier Malév Hungarian Airlines decided to order the cease of operations this morning. According to the decision, from 6 AM 3 February 2012, after 66 years of almost uninterrupted operation, Malév aircraft will not take off any more.

Until recent days, we had hopes to continue our operation, and experienced uninterrupted passenger trust, but financial information circulated in the near past resulted in a loss of trust from the side of our partners; therefore the normal financial operation of the company became impossible.

The passengers of Malév Hungarian Airlines will be informed by our customer service regarding their travel options and their compensation options. Please see the websites www.malev.com, http://www.bud.hu/english and http://www.kormany.hu/en/ministry-of-national-development for more information.

In the name of the management and employees of Malév Hungarian Airlines we hereby thank you for your trust, and express our apologies for any inconveniences and we are sorry that Malév Hungarian Airlines has come to this fate despite our best efforts.

Yours faithfully,

Lóránt Limberger (CEO) and all employees of Malév Hungarian Airlines

Getting ready to visit Hungary in February?

February means Carnival (Farsang) season in Hungary, so if you are visiting Budapest in February you might encounter any of the numerous balls and costume parties that Hungarians hold during this time. Farsang for Hungarians is a kind of "Halloween" when people celebrate to scare away winter. Carnival time starts in February with Balls and Festivals and preceeds Lent.

Since winter is about to leave, there are even more things to do in Budapest during this period, the great winter sales are still around, opera and theater performances, concerts, ice skating and much more.

Rudas Ivócsarnok (“Drinking Hall”) is a place where you can drink very healthy thermal water that comes out of the ground hot.

Located near Rudas, one of Budapest’s thermal baths, the hall is a small, single-room construction where you can often see old ladies and gentlemen waiting for their turn with empty bottles in hand. Inside, you pay at the register to the right, then take your slip of paper to a stand where hot and smelly water is bubbling out of three taps. These are coming directly from three subterranean hot springs, and you can either get a half-liter mug for 30 Forints, or fill your own empty bottle for similar, ridiculously low prices.

Now, all three types of spring water are warm, and the one with high sulfur content also smells like eggs, so it’s not something you probably want to drink to cool yourself down on a blistering summer day. Instead, it’s what you drink if you’re health-conscious and wish to prevent any one of a good dozen ailments from rheumatism to high blood pressure.

The Hall is a bit hard to find. First you should get to the Buda side of Erzsébet bridge (the closest tram stop is Döbrentei tér, or you could walk across from Pest), then look for the entrance on the edge of a wide, circular open-air area, surrounded on several sides by the elevated motorway that leads up onto the bridge.

That Budapest - one of the most beautiful cities in the world has developed where it is, is not down to some historical accident. Take a look at Gellért Hill...
