31st May of every year marks World No To***co Day, an initiative led by the World Health Organization since 1987. It is a global reminder of the lasting harm caused by to***co—not only to human health, but also to the air we breathe and the environment we share. Over time, it has helped shift public awareness, encouraging more people to reconsider smoking and move toward healthier, smoke-free lives.
The theme for World No To***co Day 2026 is “Unmasking the appeal – countering ni****ne and to***co addiction.” The WHO warns that many modern ni****ne products are carefully designed to appear harmless—flavoured, brightly packaged, and promoted through social media—yet they can quickly lead to addiction, particularly among young people. The rapid growth of e-cigarettes and emerging ni****ne products has added new complexity to global public health efforts.
To***co use affects almost every part of the human body, from the lungs and heart to long-term respiratory health. The impact is not limited to smokers alone; second-hand smoke continues to harm those nearby, including children and pregnant women. Beyond health, to***co waste such as cigarette butts remains one of the most common forms of environmental pollution, contaminating soil, waterways, and urban spaces.
