Safety Update
If you’ve been following the news, here’s the calm reality: Cyprus is safe, and the recent regional activity does not put residents or visitors at risk.
🔹 The drone incident at RAF Akrotiri did NOT come from Iran. The drone that struck one of the British military bases in Cyprus was believed to have been launched from Lebanon by an Iran‑linked group (likely Hezbollah), the impact caused only limited damage and there were no reported casualties.
🔹 Strong international support is in place:
🇬🇷 Greece – The first to respond, sending two naval frigates and four F16 fighter jets to monitor and defend airspace, providing immediate support and reassurance.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom (UK) – The UK has stepped up decisively to protect Cyprus, its personnel, and regional stability, ensuring the island remains secure and well-defended:
• The Royal Navy is deploying the destroyer HMS Dragon — a Type 45 air defence warship equipped to counter aerial threats.
• The UK is also sending helicopters with counter‑drone capabilities to reinforce air defence around RAF Akrotiri.
• British leadership has publicly reaffirmed its commitment to the security of Cyprus.
🇫🇷 France – Sending two frigate with anti-missile and anti-drone systems to boost Cyprus’ defensive capabilities.
🇩🇪 Germany & 🇮🇹 Italy – Responses are pending, highlighting a broad EU commitment to Cyprus’ security.
⚠️ Important reassurance: All these actions are preventive and defensive, not signs that Cyprus is a target. Government and EU officials have repeatedly confirmed that Cyprus remains neutral and is not participating in any war operations.
📍 Daily life continues as normal. Cafés, coworking spaces, restaurants, and city routines are unaffected. The coordinated support from Greece, the UK, and EU allies means you can feel secure and continue enjoying Cyprus worry-free and soak in all the beauty and culture Cyprus has to offer!
