Floods. Over the weekend, the European media brought shocking news about the floods in the Czech Republic. Many guests were afraid to arrive. Indeed, the eastern part of the country was hit hard. Also in “our” Jizera river basin, floods looked threatening at first: compare the two images of the iconic Harrachov waterfall. Then - almost miraculously - the rain stopped, the sun came out and the river level dropped enough that we and our clients enjoyed a fast, pleasant and completely safe rafting inn Mala Skála.

The students of the sport high school from East Jutland, Denmark, arrived traditionally in mid-September. They experienced a walk through the Unesco Geopark sandstone maze, mountainbiking and of course climbing and rapelling. As the guys are trully versatile athletes they also played a football match a match against FC Slovan Liberec. Both teams showed a great performance, however, the Czechs won 6:3 this time.

Mists in the valleys warn us that autumn is coming. And with autumn comes also the autumn outdoor season in the Český Ráj Nature Park. Before we welcome our guests, the climbing sites must be well prepared so that the movement of clients on the rocks is safe and the precious nature of the Natural Park is protected from erosion. It is a remarkable coincidence that the hot season here at Discovery always begins around the Chinese New Year. This year we start with a new team, new expectations and enthusiasm. Blessings and Happiness to everyone involved in running the agency in its thirtieth season.

Outdoor Discovery is honored to be among the founders of the UNESCO Geopark Český Ráj. We are pleased that we could contribute to the organization of the recent Taiwan Geoparks study trip that came to us in Český Ráj NP. The educational interpretation of the geological heritage of the Earth - the very mission of the Geoparks - is also reflected in our programs.

Germans call it Riesengebirge, it is Reuzengebergte in Dutch or Krkonoše-bjergene in Danish. The Czech highest mountain range. While the immense layer of snow still covers parts of the highest, alpine ridges, spring has brought joy of summer adventures to Harrachov. Pics by Alena Lukesova.
