A sweet way to support art & culture 💪🍭

My feminist walking tour on love, scandal & feminism is coming back and this time, I'm very proud to support with a mini-fundraiser during the tours.

Sign up to the tour, spend a good time, donate during the tour and you'll get some goodies in exchange! 👀

Available only on 3 dates 👉 1 - 2 - 31 May 2026.

What to expect on the tour?
We’ll explore Czech power couples like Charlotte & Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, women who defied expectations in love like Milada Horáková and Františka Plamínková, and take a critical look at Valentine’s Day and May 1st traditions—including the legacy of Karel Hynek Mácha, the so-called poet of love, whose personal life tells a different story. As we walk through the charming streets of Malá Strana, past Kampa Park, we’ll end our journey beneath the cherry trees of Petřín Garden, where lovers traditionally gather. 🌸

Many people in the Czech Republic associate May 1st with romance. 💘

Couples gather under blooming trees, kiss for good luck, and leave flowers at the statue of Karel Hynek Mácha, the famous poet behind the poem Máj.

He is often remembered as the ultimate romantic figure of Czech literature.
But when you look beyond the myth, the story becomes… problematic.
Mácha’s private diaries reveal a much darker reality: jealousy, manipulation, and abusive behaviour toward his partner Eleonora.

So this May, let’s talk about love a little more honestly.

On my Love Tour: Love, Scandal & Feminism, we explore Malá Strana & Petřín through stories of relationships — the inspiring, the scandalous, and the uncomfortable ones that history often prefers to ignore.

Because love stories shape history too.

Did a little googling and turns out the woman on Japan’s new ¥5,000 note is Tsuda Umeko: a pioneer in women’s education who studied in the US at age 6 and later founded what is now known as Tsuda university. Japan only redesigned this banknote in 2024 so she’s basically fresh off the press. Love accidentally learning things. 🌸

Oh and yes, I'm in Japan now 🇯🇵

Every year, the Czech Easter tradition of pomlázka is presented as harmless folklore.

But let’s call things what they are: a tradition where boys and men whip women and girls’ bodies in the name of beauty, fertility, and health.

Many women participate because refusing means being labelled humourless, difficult, or “killing the vibe.” Others end up with bruises, soaked with freezing water, or surrounded by drunk men.

According to a 2025 NMS survey, 80% of women do not like being whipped with a pomlázka.

So why does it continue?
Because traditions are powerful social pressures.
Because women are expected to endure discomfort to maintain social harmony.
Because violence against women is still trivialised when it’s framed as culture.

Questioning harmful traditions is not an attack on culture. It is how societies evolve. Just listen to women.

And the bare minimum is simple:
No Easter without consent.

Goddess of the Sea, Mazu, me, and bubble tea. 🌊🧋🇹🇼

Mazu was once a human woman: Lin Mo-niang. Young. Unmarried.

And still: she became a goddess.

Not because she was someone’s wife.
Not because she was a nurturer.
But because she was brave, skilled, and saved lives at sea. 🌊

We love a powerful goddess story 💅

🇹🇼 Taipei Dadaocheng District Women's History Tour with our guide, Joy!

She took us in this historical district of the capital that once housed tea factories where women were employed seasonally to pick the tea. It also once housed many hostesses restaurants making wives very unhappy...

She moved on to talk about the story of the widow selling supposed contraband ci******es in the street in 1947 that was beaten down by Kuomintang (KMT) officers, sparking an uprising against the government and regime. This is most known as the 228 incident or massacre followed by the country's longest Martial law "white terror". Tens of thousands of civilians were killed or sent to prison until 1987.

The first Taiwanese women to graduate as doctors were Tsai Ah-hsin and Hsieh Er. They made significant contributions for the country's medical field as they built the first OBGYN hospitals.

We talked about another important doctor, Chiang Wei-shui and his wife and concubine. He was a political figure of Taiwanese independence and resistance against Japanese rule. He founded the Taiwanese Cultural Association that had a huge impact on Taiwanese mindsets through oral education.
Whenever he wouldn't be available for a speech or after he passed away at the age of 40, his lover and concubine Chen Tian took over. She was not only a Taiwanese geisha but also a strong advocate for social movements. She never remarried after he passed away.

We continued the tour at the local temple run by the first woman temple manager: Chen Wen-Wen.

We finished at the wharf for a view on the river.

Thank you Joy and Taiwan Women's Centre! 🙌
