Last Wednesday, the PHI221 Contemporary Moral Issues course engaged in a scholarly discussion examining the ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence (AI).

The session featured expert insights from three distinguished scholars: Dr. Ondřej Krása, a philosopher affiliated with the University of Pardubice; Dr. Martin Vraný, a philosopher and cognitive scientist with a primary focus on data science; and Dr. Lucy Císař Brown, a social scientist affiliated with Charles University.

The debates encompassed potential doomsday scenarios related to AI, the role of AI in revitalizing scientific inquiry, and critical questions regarding the risks and threats posed by artificial intelligence. The perspectives offered by these experts provided valuable insights, prompting students to contemplate the multifaceted ethical implications of AI across various disciplinary contexts.

One of the (many) field trips as part of the ENG 215: The Struggle of the Free Press: Fake News & Conspiracy Theories course this week was the visit of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and it was a powerful experience.

We stepped into a place steeped in history — every hallway tells a story, with images that beautifully connect the past and present. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece: secure like a fortress, with bulletproof windows, yet full of energy and purpose.

We gained a rare glimpse behind the scenes, walking through open workspaces, witnessing live broadcasts, and seeing the incredible dedication of people from all over the world as they work to bring uncensored news to millions.

What struck us most was the mission. RFE/RL reports in 27 languages across 23 countries — giving voice to the voiceless in places where freedom of the press is suppressed. From exposing corruption to defending human rights, their impact is real and ongoing.

A moving moment: standing at the memorial of journalists who were killed or imprisoned for doing their job — a reminder of what’s at stake. Our guide, Jakub Tesař, provided us with deep insight into the past and present roles of RFE.

Hello everyone!! My name is Elizabeth Denise and I am an upcoming senior this fall, double majoring in Psychology and Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. I'm also working towards minors in Graphic Communications and Journalism! I've had the opportunity to be a Marketing Intern with Manifesto Market this summer in Prague for the past 6 weeks, and I'm excited to take you along on one of my last days!

Back in Raleigh, I split my time between the club volleyball team, Chi Omega, Alpha Kappa Psi, and my little kiddos whom I nanny! This schedule definitely keeps me on my toes, but I absolutely love the community that NC State offers, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Come along with me next Wednesday to see a day in my life as an Intern, snippets of some of my accomplishments so far, and an inside peek at a PR event Manifesto Market is hosting!

🎨🖋️ From pencil to print - NC State students are diving deep into the craft of etching at the Instructor’s Studio in Prague. We believe that learning a new artistic technique is also about experiencing its history. During our Drawing and Etching class, students got hands-on with traditional intaglio printmaking - techniques that haven’t changed for centuries! From sketching their ideas to pulling their own prints, it’s a creative journey that helps students connect with a craft that has shaped generations of artists.

Hi everyone!! My name is Brena Gauland and I’m a rising senior at NC State studying Elementary Education with a dual licensure in Special Education. I’m originally from Greenville, North Carolina, and am spending six weeks this summer studying abroad in Prague while soaking up every chance to explore Europe along the way!

To share a little about me, I love iced vanilla lattes, finding new shows to binge watch, football, and just spending time with the people I love. For my takeover, I’ll be sharing a day in my life abroad - everything from exploring the city to favorite study spots, travel highlights, and of course, hunting down the best gluten-free desserts. I’m so excited to bring you along for the day!!

Join Brena this Wednesday for her takeover! One of Brena's classes is ENG 215: The Struggle of the Free Press: Fake News & Conspiracy Theories, and they have a field trip planned for that day! Stay tuned on the Instagram stories https://www.instagram.com/p/DK1tEHnNPC4/

We are always delighted to see a former student return to Prague for a visit! Regan (on the right) came to Prague in the fall of 2021 with the Connect program. Now that Regan has graduated, she has returned to Prague, where her college journey began. She also inspired her friend Brena (on the left) to study abroad in Prague this summer. Stay tuned! Brena, a College of Education student, will take over our profile next Wednesday!

“Mid-Program Czech” with Lexi! Hi, I’m Lexi Efland, a rising junior at NC State majoring in Communications. I’m in the summer classic program and taking the Food and Society and Contemporary World Literature classes. I’m loving the experience! It’s my first time in Europe, and after only a few weeks, I have explored many areas of Prague and traveled to several countries on the weekends, including Austria, Hungary, and Greece.

Deciding to study abroad was a bit out of my comfort zone, but I have already learned much about different cultures and made some new best friends!

So far in Prague, I’ve loved taking a cooking class to learn traditional Czech dishes, visiting Český Krumlov as part of the whole summer program, strolling through the beautiful Vrtba Garden, walking across the Charles Bridge, and exploring Prague Castle.

A few favorite spots to eat are Point Pizza, Las Adelitas, Kro, and Summer Terrace.

I would encourage anyone considering the study abroad program to do it. It is truly an experience I will treasure for a lifetime!

Thank you, .efland, for sharing your mid-program reflections and beautiful photographs!

We know that experiencing a new culture is also about “tasting” it. Trying local food is incredibly important, and it fosters a bonding moment that brings people together. Even during the busy summer program, we offer cooking classes for our students so they can take home a few traditional recipes to share with their friends and family when they return!

I'm a Mechanical Engineering major at NC State from Charlotte, NC. Currently, I'm interning at Akkodis as a Technical Business Development Intern, and it’s a perfect fit for my future goals of merging engineering with an MBA for a career in technical development and business strategy.

What makes this internship even more thrilling? Akkodis partners with Mercedes F1! As a motorsports enthusiast, I couldn't ask for a better opportunity.

When I'm not interning, you can find me with Pack Motorsports, where I help design and build our Formula racing car. I also serve as PR Manager and coach for NC State's Striking Club. In my free time, I enjoy writing and exploring creative projects.

It feels like a month ago, but it was just a week ago today that we all went on our ice-breaking weekend in the magical town of Český Krumlov in South Bohemia.
All the internship and summer classics students, along with our staff, embarked on a three-day excursion where culture, food, and nature came together. What better way is there to connect with our peers in the programs?
Whether it’s a city tour, enjoying a traditional Czech meal, exploring castle interiors, floating down the river on a raft with friends, or watching the sunset from a hilltop, there are countless opportunities to make new friends!
