ℹ️ Czech visual artist David Černý became an overnight sensation in the spring of 1991 when the then 23-year-old art student and some friends painted a Soviet tank — the centerpiece of a memorial at Prague’s Kinsky Square to the liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945 — in a thick coat of shocking pink.

Three days later, the Czechoslovak Army had it repainted military green.

Many Czechs were outraged by Černý’s act while others cheered, viewing the tank not as a symbol of liberation from the N***s but as one marking the start of decades of Soviet occupation.

The authorities removed the tank on June 13 that year, placing it in storage at the Military Technical Museum in Lešany, about 20 kilometers outside Prague.
