From a DM 20,000 startup to a global technology leader – when Herrenknecht GmbH was officially entered into the Commercial Register in January 1978, its mission was already cleary defined: “development, sale and servicing of tunnel boring machines”. Back then, it was a considerable amount of money.

Just one year later, in 1979, the company generated its first million euros in revenue with a team of only seven employees. New offices and an assembly plant with a total area of 1,788 m² opened in Schwanau, the training of our first apprentice was initiated, and a telex machine connected the newly established business to its customers around the world.

Bangkok, Thailand is where our Asia journey began in 1996.

Herrenknecht Asia Thailand was founded to support the construction of Bangkok’s sewer system with state-of-the-art pipe-jacking equipment in the 1990s.
Between 1992 and 2000, 100km of pipe jacking was carried out in the Thai capital to lay the foundation for a sustainable water infrastructure. More than 30 sets of Herrenknecht equipment—ranging from the AVN400 to the AVN1500—completed runs between 80 and 200m in length at depths of up to 15m (pic 1).

At the same time, around 7.6km of pipe jacking was carried out for electricity supply (pic 2).

In the early 2000’s, the 7th Bangkok Water Supply Improvement was realized using an EPB3776 machine (4.31m in diameter), adding 3.3km to the existing water network. The next milestone followed from 2011 to 2015 with the Fourth LNG Transmission Line Project—a major pipeline project in which the Direct Pipe and Pipe Express methods made their Asian debut (pipeline diameter 42’’, max. drive length 708m, pic 3).

The confined space conditions were particularly challenging: large sections of the route run beneath densely populated areas as well as along a heavily trafficked highway and parallel high-voltage power lines. A total of 45 waterways and 189 roads were crossed—a project that demonstrated the technological capabilities of our tunnelling technology.

Work continues steadily underground in Thailand today: together with our partners, we are advancing key infrastructure projects such as the Metropolitan Water Authority’s Water Transfer Tunnel Plan 9 and delivered a total of 6 TBMs with diameters up to 4.8m since 2022. These machines handled tunneling lengths of up to 4.1km as well as tight curve radii under demanding urban conditions.

Till 2020, more than 23km were added to the electricity network using Herrenknecht equipment. Initiated in 2022 new energy connections are being created thanks to Direct Pipe solutions (36’’)—such as for the South Bangkok Power Plant Transmission Line with tunnelling lengths of up to 1,000m (pic 4).

Another reason to celebrate: Bangkok Metro Purple Line EPB machines, 6.54m in diameter, achieved final breakthrough on May 20th. A milestone for our team and customers (pic 5).

At Herrenknecht, we know that tunnels are more than just marvels of engineering. They are connectors and destinations, where story and science mix. Ultimately, they are human places, built by engineers, and used by everyone like Luke Agbaimoni – Award-winning photographer and artist from London.

He is the Founder of the Tube Mapper project, and author of three photography books focused on the London Underground. We ask him about his “tunnel vision”.

“My name is Luke Agbaimoni Photography. I’m an artist based in London who is best known for the Tubemapper - London Photography
Tube Mapper project. I've been capturing moments at every station and stop on the London Underground tube map because I think that there's beauty in this underground world. Especially in London, it’s almost like the Underground is the heartbeat of the city. It connects everything like a central nervous system.

My favourite underground space in general is related to me being a Southeast Londoner. It’s the Thames Tunnel. It opened in 1843 and it was the first tunnel ever constructed under a river. It was just a walkway at first, used for pedestrians, was then later changed to be used for underground trains. Today, Wapping station utilises the Thames Tunnel, so you’ve got all these people who might not realise their train passes through an historic masterpiece; a museum piece that you can just commute through.

Ultimately, London’s underground network is about moving people around, but I love that it was never just slap-dashed together. Every detail in every station was carefully designed by architects working alongside the engineers. Before I started the project, I didn't have any appreciation for tiling, but now I really do. The tiles on the network are fantastic.”

In 2010, Luke won a photography competition being run by Docklands Light Railway, and the prize was a mirrorless camera. That’s when he started to get more seriously into photography, and it’s what kickstarted the Tubemapper - London Photography project and eventually, led to the books.
“Once I started sharing the photos online, the reaction was huge. People replied with their own personal stories about each station. The Tube has like four million users every day. That’s millions of people all sharing this same space – experiencing the same visual stimuli as each other – but not talking about it. Londoners are famous for not speaking on the Tube. The photos of these familiar spaces led to lots of online conversations.”

The number of offshore installations for expanding the use of renewable energy and the construction of coastal infrastructure has grown rapidly in recent years. As a result, demand for economical and environmentally friendly installation technologies for offshore foundations has increased.

These are needed for wind turbines, substations, tidal power plants and bridges as well as for harbor infrastructure such as quay walls, breakwaters and jetties. In Saint Nazaire and Noirmoutier, France, 2 wind farms were successfully installed.

What makes these projects special is that they mark the first use of the Offshore Foundation Drilling (OFD®) technology developed with Offshore. Almost exactly five years ago, on June 7, 2021, Herrenknecht OFD technology, operating from the DEME vessel “Innovation,” was used to drill the first of 73 boreholes for offshore foundations, setting a new standard.

Thanks to OFD®, foundations can be installed in ecologically sensitive areas or in soils unsuitable for pile foundations.
Again, almost exactly 2 years ago, starting on June 1, 2024, the technology once again proved its worth during the installation of 61 foundation boreholes for the Noirmoutier offshore wind farm.

In the Swiss town of Rolle on Lake Geneva, a Herrenknecht HDD rig played a key role in a pilot project to supply heat using lake water.
MorgesLac, a new neighborhood a few km away on Lake Geneva will be supplied by a district heating network that uses water from the lake as its energy source. Geothermal energy and natural gas will complement each other.

The machine, christened Kurt by our customer Marty Bauleistungen AG, laid a 380-metre-long DN900 PE pipe with a pulling force of 300 tonnes, starting from the shore to pump lake water from a depth of 45 meters into the district heating and cooling system of MorgesLac.

In a heat exchanger, energy is extracted from the lake water, which is 6 to 8 degrees Celsius, and a two-stage temperature distribution system is used to produce 45-degree heating water and 65-degree drinking water. This separation significantly improves the system’s energy efficiency.
Under normal operating conditions, 90% of the thermal energy is supplied by heat pumps. The gas boiler provides the remaining 10%, usually on particularly cold winter days. Reducing C02 emissions step by step is the main goal.

If the pilot project by EneRolle, a joint venture between Romande Energie and the municipality of Rolle, proves successful, the municipality plans to roll out the system across the entire urban area.

June 1 marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. But what could we as Herrenknecht write new about this project?

For our company, "Gotthard" was more than a "usual" tunnelling project — it was a true game changer. A milestone that gave us momentum, credibility, and new opportunities worldwide.

Of course, we could highlight again the records and challenges, but tunnel fans and experts know them. So this time, we chose to tell the story through a picture, one that captures the scale, emotions, and achievements behind this unique project.

We are happy to contribute to the 11km Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project initiated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority- MMRDA, one of the city’s most ambitious infrastructure initiatives.

Once completed, the project is set to transform urban mobility, reducing travel time between Thane and Borivali from 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes, while significantly easing congestion across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Herrenknecht India manufactured and already supplied 2 Single Shield TBMs out of total 4 TBM’s required. The first two TBM’s, namely Nayak and Arjuna, each equipped with an impressive 13.34m cutterhead diameter designed for hard rock. These machines will play a critical role in excavating through the complex geological formations beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the Yeoor Hills. Equipment for our Group Brands H+E and TMS will also be used.

Last week, the first Herrenknecht TBM for Munich’s 2nd core S‑Bahn route has successfully passed its Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) at the Herrenknecht headquarters in Schwanau, Germany.

The Mixshield measures around 178m in length, weighs approximately 700 tons, and has a 5m diameter. It was specially designed for the challenging geological and urban condidtions beneath Munich´s city center.

On behalf of the DB InfraGO, the ARGE Tunnel Hauptbahnhof consortium (Wayss & Freytag, Firmengruppe Max Bögl, Züblin, Bauer Group) will excavate an exploratory tunnel for a project that will significantly improve mobility in Munich through the 2nd core S-Bahn route.

In just a few months, the TBM will start driving, preparing the ground for the main construction phases ahead – in sections more than 40 meters below the groundwater table and in close proximity to existing S-Bahn and subway lines.

Did you know that Martin Herrenknecht´s first “modern tunnel boring machines” were inspired by his work at the Seelisberg Tunnel in Switzerland?

He spent five years as the director of mechanical engineering service at the large Huttegg jobsite for the Seelisberg Tunnel in Switzerland. Responsible for “Big John”, the world’s largest tunnel boring machine at the time (11.80 m), he gathered extensive tunnelling experience and laid the foundation for a great idea.

In 1976, the first “modern tunnel boring machines” were designed on drawing paper – the MH-1 to MH-3 partial-face excavation machines. These machines followed the principle of partial-face excavation machines, similar to “Big John,” and featured an integrated excavator operated by a single person – an innovation that significantly improved efficiency in tunnelling.

The first order was for two machines: an MH-1 deployed in Nuremberg and an MH-3 in Luxembourg. That same summer, Martin Herrenknecht hired his first employee.

Congratulations to the Concord for Engineering & Contracting teams on the final breakthrough at the Cairo Metro Line 4 Phase I – West Bound (Up Line) – project in Cairo, Egypt.

The 6.7m diameter Mixshield TBM successfully completed its 6.4km drive.

Particular focus was placed on tunnelling beneath the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum. Concerns proved unfounded thanks to advanced technology and careful planning.

The machine not only met the high expectations for fast, smooth progress in a densely populated area, but exceeded them: in January 2025, it sets a world record with 449 segment rings installed and 718m advance per month in the Mixshield category of 6m to 8m diameter.

The project is the first construction phase of Metro Line 4 , which will connect the Greater Cairo region from west to east. Once completed, the line will be 42km long and serve 39 stations across the districts of Haram, Faisal, Omraneya, Giza, Nasr City, Al-Azhar University, and New Cairo.

The projected figure of 2 million daily passengers, along with the attendance of Egyptian President Al-Sisi at the breakthrough ceremony, underlines the project’s vital importance to public transportation infrastructure in the Greater Cairo area.
