In 1990, the Bözberg project in Switzerland became an important door opener — demonstrating that Herrenknecht was ready to take on major challenges.

We delivered our first shielded Hard Rock TBM. With a diameter of 11.80 m, the TBM excavated two road tunnels, each with a length of 3,200 m.
The project quickly became a test of engineering expertise: when parts of the drive system failed and the main bearing had to be replaced, there was only one option: find a solution and keep going.
Because success doesn’t mean delivering a machine from the factory but seeing it emerge on the other side of the mountain.

But that was not all. Herrenknecht established its first overseas subsidiary in the USA and took the next step towards becoming a global player.

A strong presence for a strong market: At bauma CONEXPO INDIA 2026, Herrenknecht welcomed customers, partners and industry experts at its largest-ever exhibition booth in India.

Since 2011, the trade fair has been an important platform for showcasing our tunnelling and mining technologies. This year, visitors experienced landmark projects from around the world on a 3 m circular LED display and explored models of our latest technologies, including tunnel boring machines, separation plants and cutting tools.

Nearly two decades of development in India are reflected in strong partnerships and ambitious infrastructure projects:
→ Trusted by more than 50 contractors
→ Around 160 transport and utility tunnelling projects
→ Approximately 400 km of tunnels planned with Herrenknecht technology

From Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru to Kanpur, Mumbai and the Himalayas, Herrenknecht technology supports the development of underground infrastructure across the country.

And the journey continues: our new facility in Chennai is currently under construction. With an additional 50,000 m², we are strengthening local manufacturing capabilities and expanding our long-term commitment to the Indian market.

Congratulations to Ferrovial BEMO Tunnelling JV on being shortlisted for the New Civil Engineer British Construction & Infrastructure Awards 2026 in both the Innovation Impact (Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine on Infrastructure Projects) and Construction Excellence Award categories for the Grain to Tilbury project, delivered alongside BEMO Tunnelling for National Grid.

With more than 20 years of experience in Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine (VSM) technology, we are proud that our expertise contributed to this outstanding project. With Verena – Europe's largest VSM featuring a 15 m inner diameter – the launch and reception shafts were successfully constructed in challenging soft-ground conditions with high groundwater levels beneath the River Thames, enabling a safe, efficient and sustainable construction process.

We are proud to have contributed to this project and value the strong collaboration with Ferrovial BEMO JV and National Grid. This nomination reflects the commitment, expertise and teamwork of everyone involved throughout the project. Only one more month to go til the final results, keep your fingers crossed 🤞🤞!

At Herrenknecht, we know that tunnels are more than just marvels of engineering. They are connectors and destinations, where story and science mix. Ultimately, they are human places, built by engineers, and used by everyone like Marta Bordas Eddy.

“My name is Marta Bordas Eddy, and I am an architect -habitat. But the first thing people usually see is that I am a wheelchair user – I have been since I was 16. When I was in hospital, I found myself thinking about all of the places I could no longer access. And it became obvious to me that I had to fight back. That's how I naively decided to study architecture – as a way to try to solve my accessibility problem.

I now specialise in universal design. When I was studying, no one talked about it as a field, but these days, everyone has at least heard of it. What’s changed most, in my view, is that we’re living longer. As life expectancy rises, so does our need to stay active and autonomous for as long as possible. That’s why it’s essential to design environments that support us throughout the life course – spaces that are friendly, low-effort, and built to last.

My PhD focused on the link between empathy and architecture. At its core is a simple idea: accessibility is not just for a minority that has nothing to do with you. It’s about everyone. It's understanding that you're designing for your future self – your older self – and the ability to live a nice, full, independent life.”
“For many people – myself included – underground spaces often feel unwelcoming, and many people experience a slight sense of discomfort or disorientation. But if you can't use stairs, that discomfort can turn into something else: the fear of being stuck.

Accessibility must be present through the entire chain of access: for example, it’s not enough for both the blue and green metro lines to have elevators if the transfer between them isn’t accessible - and no, asking someone to go up to street level and transfer above ground is not a valid solution. Accessibility also relies on accurate, up-to-date information: if an elevator is out of service, I need to know before I reach the station – it’s too late once I’m there.

Underground spaces also have enormous potential. In some countries like Finland, where snow is a constant, underground tunnels connect buildings in ways that feel warm and safe. And many blind people prefer the metro over the bus: because they know exactly where the train doors will open, and that predictability gives them more autonomy.”

Accessibility in underground spaces isn’t a nice-to-have— it’s essential infrastructure. It’s not just about having elevators, it’s about having the right number, in the right places, and ensuring they work reliably. If I could choose, I’d design some metro entrances as gradual, open-air mega-ramps – like a public plaza that flows naturally underground. In such a way, if an emergency occurs, your safety would not depend entirely on others. While this might make the route longer, it’d also make it better."

This year is not only special for Herrenknecht, but also for one of our long-standing customers and partners, today known as Implenia.
The story began in 1830 with Locher & Cie. The Locher brand has a rich heritage in construction and engineering. In 1998, the company became part of Zschokke Holding, which merged with Batigroup in 2006 to form Implenia.
Today, the Swiss-based company proudly looks back on 160 years of creating the future.

Together, we share more than 35 years of collaboration and got involved in major lighthouse projects: N3 Bözberg Aarau (pic1), Tunnel du Mont Russelin (pic2), San Pellegrino, Murgenthal, Zürich–Thalwil, Zurich Kl**en Airport (pic3) or Oenzberg tunnel, to name just a few.

In 2003 came a major milestone: the Gotthard Base Tunnel (pic4).
In 2017, more than 25 years after our first joint project, we reunited at the Bözberg Tunnel (pic5). Followed: Albvorland Tunnel (pic6), the innovative E-Power Pipe® installations at Großgartach and Bacharach (pic7), Lyon Metro Line B, the Brenner Base Tunnel (pic8), Grand Paris Express (pic9), Toulouse Metro Line C.
And of course, we cannot forget the second tube of the Gotthard Road Tunnel, which started in 2021 (pic10).

This impressive project list speaks for itself, even if not complete 😊.

A 1,707m microtunnelling drive completed in just 16 weeks using a Herrenknecht AVN2500D MTBM has set a new North American record for single drive length with pipe jacking at the Ferry Road and Riverbend Combined Sewer Relief project owned for the City of Winnipeg, involving the installation of a new 2,400 mm ID reinforced concrete storm sewer.

Congratulations to our customer Errritt Construction Ltd. for making it to the top 10 long-distance drives with Herrenknecht AVND technology for pipe jacking.

Despite challenging ground conditions with large boulders and a curved alignment, the team delivered with precision, expertise and dedication.

While studying already, Diana Rennkamp knew she wanted to be part of exciting construction projects. Her Herrenknecht moment began with this exact opportunity.

In Research & Development, as civil engineer she’s involved in the development of the Direct Pipe method—a technology that enables pipe jacking runs of up to 2,000 meters in a single stretch and quickly became a hit with clients. “Here, I was given the freedom to do exactly what I do best.”

After that, she set out into the world. As a product manager, she traveled internationally and promoted the newly launched innovative method through countless presentations and trade show appearances.

Today, she brings over 20 years of experience in business development to the table. And she helps customers worldwide find the optimal trenchless technology for every challenge.

A warm welcome to our 49 new trainees and dual students starting their professional journey at our locations in Schwanau and Kehl. 🚀

For decades, Herrenknecht AG has been one of the largest training companies in the Ortenau region. Today, about 200 trainees and dual students are part of our training programs, supported by a dedicated team of full-time trainers as well as experienced part-time trainers.

An in-house training workshop, internal instruction, and special exam preparation are just as much a part of the training program as team building and leisure events.

For Herrenknecht, investing in and developing young talent is an important part of securing the future. By providing high-quality training opportunities and hands-on experience, we are helping to develop the skilled professionals of tomorrow.

Congratulations to Roy Slocombe on receiving the prestigious James Clark Memorial Medal 2026 from the British Tunnelling Society.
The James Clark Memorial Medal is one of the British tunnelling industry’s highest honors and recognizes outstanding contributions to the profession.

Throughout his career Roy has been involved with tunnelling works, mostly with tunnelling contractors, and latterly more involved with tunnelling equipment.

When Roy took over the leadership of Herrenknecht International Ltd. (HIL) in Sunderland in 2000, he was able to draw on decades of experience in tunnelling and engineering to help position Herrenknecht for the opportunities ahead.
Under his leadership, we strengthened our local presence and supported some of the UK’s most significant tunnelling programs, including the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, London Power Tunnels, Thames Tideway and London Crossrail where Herrenknecht were able to supply 8 EPB shields and Mixshields for 42 km of tunnelling across London.

Beyond his role at Herrenknecht, Roy has been involved in advancing the wider tunnelling profession. Through his work with industry organizations, technical committees and training initiatives, he has helped improve standards, safety and knowledge sharing across UK tunnelling sector while supporting the development of future tunnelling professionals.

Few people have shaped both Herrenknecht’s journey in the UK and the wider tunnelling industry to the extent Roy has.

In 1990, one of the first Herrenknecht EPB machines ever used in Germany was produced.
The 3.10m o.d. EPB machine, in conjunction with the pipe jacking technique, completed 3 straight drives to instal a new 1.5km long x 2.60m i.d. combined collector sewer through the Bürgerpark in Bremen, Germany.

In a daring move, the machine excavated a 3.08m o.d. collector sewer tunnel less than one machine diameter beneath the surface and closely parallel to a canal in the Bürgerpark in Bremen. Driving under just 1m to 2m of cover, the TBM successfully excavated relatively homogenous material comprising waterbearing peat, silt and sands with the watertable lying about 1m above the tunnel crown.
