Is this Germany’s most beautiful castle? 🏰🇩🇪

While many flock to the Bavarian Alps, those on a road trip through Saxony will find a very strong contender just 13km from Dresden: Schloss Moritzburg.

Originally built in 1542 as a hunting lodge, it was later transformed into a Baroque masterpiece by Augustus the Strong 👑

Inside, the castle is open to the public and houses one of Europe’s most significant collections of hunting trophies alongside incredible, ornate gold-embossed leather wallpapers 🦌

Perhaps its most unique treasure is the 'Feather Room', decorated with over a million colourful bird feathers—a display of royal extravagance unlike anything else in the world 🪶

Unlike nearby Dresden, which was devastated in 1945, Moritzburg survived the Second World War largely intact 🛡️ As the Red Army approached, the Saxon royals buried crates of silver treasure in the castle forest.

While most was seized by Soviet troops in 1946, a final hidden treasure remained undiscovered until it was accidentally unearthed by archaeologists in 1996 💎

Does Moritzburg take the top spot, or is there another German castle that beats it? 👇

🏰 Lübeck: The Grand Finale Before the Ferry

For many of us heading north, the A1 motorway usually means one thing: the end of the road is near. But before you roll onto the ferry to Denmark or Sweden, there is one more town waiting to be discovered - the medieval masterpiece, Lübeck.

Here is why you should consider one last detour:

🧱 The Altstadt & Holstentor The entire Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can’t miss the city’s iconic 15th-century gate, the Holstentor, as you approach the town centre

📖 The World of Buddenbrooks Lübeck is the setting of Thomas Mann’s Nobel Prize-winning novel, Buddenbrooks. You can visit the Buddenbrookhaus, the former home of the Mann family, which brings the grand and dramatic history of the city’s wealthy merchant families to life

🍬 The Capital of Marzipan You haven’t truly visited Lübeck until you’ve stepped into Café Niederegger. Whether you love the sweet almond treat or not, their marzipan museum and shop are a legendary part of the town's soul

🎄 A Fairytale Christmas If you are travelling in late November or December, Lübeck hosts one of Germany’s most authentic Christmas markets. The scent of roasted almonds and mulled wine against the backdrop of red-brick Gothic churches is pure magic

🎢 Family Thrills & Coastal Breezes Travelling with kids? Hansa-Park is just up the road. It is the only theme park in Germany located right by the sea. Or, for a quieter break, head to the pier at Timmendorfer Strand to breathe in the salty air before your ferry crossing

Road Trip Tip: ⚓ Lübeck is perfectly positioned for those using the ferries to Scandinavia. It’s the ideal place for a final German dinner or an overnight stay to ensure you catch the early morning departure feeling refreshed.

Are you a "straight to the ferry" driver, or do you like to squeeze in one last historic stop like Lübeck? 👇

🏭 The Ruhr Area: Germany’s Most Underrated Road Trip Surprise?

Most travellers see the Ruhrgebiet as nothing more than a dense network of motorways to be bypassed as quickly as possible. But if you take a turn-off, you’ll find one of the most fascinating urban landscapes in Europe.

The Ruhr was once the industrial heartbeat of Europe. It was a powerhouse of coal mines and steel mills. Today, this history has been transformed into a world of "industrial nature," world-class art, and a premier destination for cycling.

Here is why you should consider a pit stop here:

🎨 UNESCO World Heritage: Zollverein
Located in Essen, this was once the world’s largest coal mine. It is now a stunning architectural site where you can walk amongst giant machines or visit the Red Dot Design Museum. 🏗️

🚲 A Cyclist’s Paradise: The Industrial Heritage Trail
The region features a massive network of over 700 km of cycle paths, including the famous RuhrtalRadweg. Many of these routes follow old railway lines, creating flat, green corridors that connect monuments without you ever having to worry about cars. It’s perfect if you have bikes on the back of the car and need a proper leg-stretch. 🌳

🎢 Tiger & Turtle – Magic Mountain
In Duisburg, you’ll find a massive sculpture that looks like a rollercoaster, but it’s actually a walkway. It sits on top of an old slag heap and offers an incredible view of the industrial horizon.

🌳 Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord
An abandoned ironworks turned into a public park. You can climb old blast furnaces for a view or see the site illuminated in spectacular colours at night. It feels like stepping onto a sci-fi film set. 🛸

Road Trip Tip: 🛎️
The Ruhr area is perfectly located where the A1, A2, and A3 meet. Whether you want to explore the "Magic Mountain" on foot or cycle a section of the old railway trails, it’s a brilliant break from the Autobahn.

🛣️ How many kilometres of Autobahn do you think Germany has?

The German motorway network is one of the most dense in the world. In terms of sheer length, it is only surpassed by China, the USA, and Spain - all of which cover a significantly larger land area than Germany. 🌍

The answer? Germany boasts a staggering 13,200 km of Autobahn! 🏎️💨

The longest stretch is the A7, which begins at the Danish border in Jutland and travels 963 km south before reaching its end at Füssen in the Bavarian Alps. 🏔️🇩🇪

🕰️ Regensburg: A Medieval Gem with a Giant Secret

Driving along the A3 or A93? Don't just pass by! Regensburg is a UNESCO World Heritage treasure that escaped WWII unscathed, making it a perfect time capsule stop on your road trip.

Here is why you should take the detour:

🌳 The Allee of the Giants (Pappelallee)
A local secret on the Oberer Wöhrd island. This avenue of ancient, towering trees feels like a natural cathedral making it perfect for a peaceful walk away from the crowds.

🏘️ The Stone Bridge
Walk across the 12th-century Steinerne Brücke. It’s a medieval engineering marvel with the best views of the city skyline and the Danube.

🍴 History You Can Taste
Right by the bridge is the Historische Wurstküche. They’ve been serving grilled sausages for over 850 years! It’s officially the world’s oldest sausage kitchen.

🏰 Gothic Majesty
Don't miss St. Peter’s Cathedral. Its twin spires dominate the city, and the 14th-century stained glass inside is breathtaking.

Road Trip Tip: 🛎️
Skip the motorway service station and spend an hour here instead. It’s the perfect midway point towards Vienna or Prague.

Are you a fan of medieval history, or do you prefer finding hidden nature spots like the Allee of the Giants? 👇

🏰 Neuschwanstein & Füssen: The Fairytale Finale

If you follow the A7 motorway to the very edge of the Austrian border, you’ll find the ultimate road trip reward: Füssen.

As Bavaria’s highest town, it’s a stunning mix of Alpine peaks, turquoise lakes, and history. Here’s why it deserves a spot on your itinerary:

🏰 A Romantic Masterpiece: Just outside town sits Neuschwanstein Castle. With its soaring white turrets perched on a rugged cliff, it is the ultimate symbol of 19th-century romanticism and looks like something straight out of a storybook.

🏘️ Old World Charm: The town centre is a maze of cobblestones and colourful facades. Don't miss the view from the Hohes Schloss towers—it offers a fabulous perspective over the rooftops and the mountains.

🏔️ Alpine Nature: Whether you fancy a lakeside stroll or a mountain hike, the landscape here is a paradise for nature lovers.

Where to stay? 🚗

Füssen is popular, so book ahead!

🛌 Pension Rexha am Weißensee: Perfect for families, easy parking, and incredible lake views.

🛌 Best Western Plus Hotel Füssen: Right in town with EV charging and great facilities.

Road Trip Tip:
Füssen is the perfect "last stop" in Germany. I recommend staying for a night or two to soak in the Bavarian atmosphere before you cross the border into Austria.

Which do you prefer: exploring historic town centres or heading out into the mountains? 👇

⛪ A Southern German Giant: Discovering Ulm Minster

If you want to see the top of this spire, you really have to tilt your head back! Standing at 161.53 metres, the spire of Ulm Minster (Ulmer Münster) is a legendary landmark that dominates the skyline of Ulm in Southern Germany.

While it held the title of the "World's Tallest Church" for over a century, it was recently overtaken by the completion of the central tower of the Sagrada Família in 2025.

Perfectly Placed on the A7 🚗
For those of us driving the A7 motorway, Ulm is a fantastic place to break your journey. The church is located just a few minutes from the motorway, making it a accessible and impressive stop in Southern Germany.

1377: Built by the People 🛡️
The history of Ulm Minster is fascinating. In the Middle Ages, the nearest church was outside the city walls, which was dangerous during times of conflict. Because Ulm was a wealthy free imperial city, the citizens decided they didn't want to rely on bishops or nobility so they funded and built their own massive church right in the city centre.

Better than a Cathedral? 🧐
Despite its grand scale, it is technically not a cathedral (Dom). A cathedral is the seat of a bishop, but Ulm Minster was built and paid for by the citizens themselves. It is a minster - the people's church, and a symbol of their independence.

Road Trip Advice:
If you need to stretch your legs after hours on the A7, take the challenge and climb the 768 steps to the top. On a clear day, the view reaches all the way to the Alps! It’s the perfect way to burn off some energy before the next leg of your trip.

Would you dare to climb the 768 steps to the top, or is the view from the Münsterplatz impressive enough for you? 👇

🏰 Cologne Cathedral: A Masterpiece 600 Years in the Making

Every day, 20,000 people visit Kölner Dom, the cathedral that towers proudly over Germany’s fourth-largest city. As you look up at the 157-metre spires, it’s impossible not to be awestruck by how such a masterpiece was built with the tools of the Middle Ages.

The Quest for the Divine Light 🕯️
The first stone was laid in 1248. At the time, powerful bishops competed to build the tallest and most beautiful churches. Cologne’s new cathedral was designed in the Gothic style—a revolutionary way of building that used high windows to fill the space with light, a symbol of the divine.

The Treasure of the Three Kings 👑
The cathedral was actually built for a very specific reason: to house the remains of the Three Wise Men.

The Shrine: To honour these relics, the famous goldsmith Nicholas of Verdun began work on a magnificent shrine around 1190.

The Detail: It took over 30 years to finish. Made of gold, silver, and precious gems, it tells the story of salvation from creation to judgement day.

The Scale: At 2.2 metres long, it remains the largest reliquary in Europe and can still be seen behind the high altar today.

A Miraculous Survivor 🛠️
Construction took a long pause in the 1700s (partly because the original drawings went missing!), and the towers weren't finally completed until 1880. Miraculously, the cathedral survived the heavy bombings of WWII. While damaged, it was meticulously restored to its former glory.

Today, Kölner Dom is a UNESCO World Heritage site—a gothic masterpiece that continues to draw pilgrims and road trippers from all over the world.

🚗 Road Tripper Tip:
If you are driving the A1, A3, or A4, Cologne is a fantastic break.

Park at one of the "Park & Ride" stations outside the city centre and take the train straight to the station (Hauptbahnhof) - it lets you out right at the foot of the Cathedral!

Have you ever climbed the 533 steps to the top of the South Tower? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Heidelberg: Seriously, don’t just drive past this one! 🏰

I’ve driven the A5/A6 route many times, but taking the 10-minute detour into Heidelberg is always worth it. If you haven't been, you’re missing out on what might be the most atmospheric city in Germany.

The castle ruins are massive - honestly, photos don't do the scale justice—and they look like something straight out of a gothic novel. But the real magic is just wandering through the Altstadt. It’s one of the few places that wasn't touched by WWII, so the history here feels incredibly real.

Pro tip for the best view: Cross the Old Bridge and head up the Philosophers' Walk (Philosophenweg). It’s a bit of a climb, but I promise the view from the top is the best you'll get. You’ll see the castle, the red roofs, and the river laid out right in front of you—perfect for that one "wow" photo.
