About Jeff Mannes

My name is Jeff Mannes (pronoun: he). I am a social scientist, speaker, tour guide, and freelance writer born in Luxembourg-City, Luxembourg and living in Berlin, Germany. I studied sociology and gender studies (B.A.) in Trier and Göttingen (Germany). I focussed my studies mainly on human sexualities, q***r studies, and human-animal relations. I wrote my Bachelor Thesis about the social construction of eating meat, and it was chosen for publication in the German sociological magazine. I have more than ten years of experience as a freelance writer and public speaker. I have been speaking publicly and writing for magazines such as SIEGESSÄULE (Berlin’s highest-circulating city magazine, as well as Europe’s most-read LGBTIQ magazine) or the Lëtzebuerger Journal, as well as for non-profits such as the German AIDS Service Organization (Deutsche Aidshilfe). I have been volunteering and working for several NGOs, including the German AIDS Service Organization (Deutsche Aidshilfe), Luxembourg’s HIV-Berodung and Stop AIDS Now / ACCESS, as well as Beyond Carnism. Since 2018, I have been successfully hosting my critically acclaimed guided tour Berlin’s History of S*x, supported by the Federal Foundation Magnus Hirschfeld. In 2020, I started offering this tour as an online version, and in 2021, I launched this tour in Augmented Reality – powered by ZAUBAR.com. In 2022, I plan to launch my second guided tour about The Story of Berlin’s Clubs. I have been working with educational institutions like Northwestern University (Illinois, USA) or die deutSCHule in Berlin. I am currently studying gender studies (M.A.) at the Humboldt University in Berlin, focussing my studies on human sexualities.

People often ask me which tour they should do… and honestly? It depends on what you’re curious about.

If you’re into history, I’ll take you back to the early q***r movements, the people who were already asking big questions long before the world was ready.
That’s Where It All Began: Berlin’s Q***r & Trans History Tour.

If you want something a bit more… after dark, we get into Berlin’s sex-positive culture, the spaces, the rules, and everything people usually misunderstand.
That’s K!nky Taboos: Berlin After Dark.

And if you want to go a bit further, more access, more conversation, a deeper dive into Berlin’s kink scene, that’s K!nky Taboos: Berlin’s Forbidden Desires.

And if you want to connect the dots, freedom, rebellion, identity, the messy parts that made this city what it is, that’s Berlin Uncensored: A History of S*x & Freedom.

They’re all different. But they all do the same thing: help you see Berlin a bit more clearly.

If one of them sounds like your thing, you’ll know.

I run a few different tours in Berlin, but they all start the same way: with curiosity.

Some people come for q***r history.
Some for the city’s wilder side.
Some just want to understand why Berlin feels the way it does.

I don’t really do “standard tours.” We walk, we talk, we question things a bit. Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we get into heavier topics, sometimes people leave with more questions than answers.

That’s kind of the point.

Whether it’s your first time here or you’ve been living in Berlin for years, there’s always another layer to uncover.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, you’ll probably enjoy it.

I recently ended up in The Washington Post, talking about Berlin’s nightlife, culture, and everything people think they understand about this city.

It’s always interesting seeing Berlin explained to a wider audience, especially when it comes to places like Berghain. There’s a lot of myth, a lot of curiosity… and not always much context.

I’m glad I got to share a bit of how I see it, the stories behind it, the nuance, the parts that don’t always make it into headlines.

If you’re curious, check the article link in our bio. | Video by

The history I share can be heavy, but it’s also full of joy, resilience, and real people finding their place in the world. I always try to hold both.

Thanks for being part of it, Brianna, and for taking the time to write this

Berlin doesn’t really reward planning. It rewards curiosity.

If you’re here, don’t try to “see everything”. Pick an area… and stay there for a while.

A few simple things I always suggest:

• Walk without headphones
Berlin is noisy in a very specific way, with conversations, music, and random moments. You miss a lot if you tune it out.

• Don’t follow the main streets
The interesting parts are usually one or two blocks away. Courtyards, side streets, places that don’t look like much at first.

• Sit somewhere for longer than you planned
A café, a park, even a random bench. Berlin makes more sense when you stop moving.

• Go out… but don’t force it
If it works, it works. If it doesn’t, that’s also part of the experience here.

There’s no “right way” to do Berlin. But if you slow down a bit, it tends to reveal itself.

Berlin has layers. Most people just don’t look for them.

Don’t rush to the next “must-see”. Walk a bit slower. That’s where the city starts to open up.

If you’re wandering around, here are a few corners I like:

• SO36 & Kotti, Kreuzberg
This is the pulse of Berlin’s q***r and punk underground. Visit this place if you want an alternative to Schöneberg's gay district.

• Märkisches Ufer, Mitte
Walk along the water, and you can almost feel the city shifting between past and present. Berlin never really stands still.

• Around KitKatClub
Not about going in. Just knowing this exists, this idea of openness, of living things rather than hiding them, says a lot about Berlin.

• Bergmannkiez, Kreuzberg
You'll find such great food spots and alternative stores here.

That’s where Berlin starts to make sense.

I get a lot of people asking me about Berlin’s “k!nky side.”

Most of what they’ve heard is either exaggerated… or completely wrong.

So I created K!nky Taboos: Berlin’s Forbidden Desires as a way to actually understand it, not from the outside, not as a spectacle, but by stepping into the spaces and having real conversations.

We meet the people behind it, we talk about how it all works, and yes, people ask questions they didn’t think they’d ever ask out loud.

It’s open, it’s honest, sometimes a bit challenging… but that’s usually where things get interesting.

If you’re curious, that’s enough.

"People hear a lot about Berlin after dark and most of it isn’t quite how it actually works.

On K!nky Taboos: Berlin After Dark, I take you into that world, not when it’s loud and chaotic, but during the day, when you can actually see the spaces, ask questions, and understand what’s really going on.

We step into places like Atrium and Insomnia, talk about how they function, who’s behind them, and why Berlin ended up becoming this kind of city.

No hype, no myths, just real conversations and a bit of curiosity.

One of the guests, .thered, went on to write a full reflection about the experience, not just what we saw, but what it meant, the questions it raised, and the conversations around it.

That’s honestly the part I enjoy the most. Not just showing places, but seeing people take it further, think about it, write about it, challenge it.

K!nky Taboos: Berlin After Dark isn’t just about what happens in these spaces. It’s about understanding them, questioning them, and sometimes seeing things a bit differently afterwards.

Thanks for this, Chris, really appreciated the perspective.

On Where It All Began: Berlin’s Q***r & Trans History Tour, I walk you through the streets where the first q***r and trans movements took shape, not quietly, but boldly.

We talk about pioneers like Magnus Hirschfeld, early trans identities, le***an spaces in the 1920s, and the communities that built something radically new… only to see it violently erased and later rebuilt.

I don’t just tell you what happened. I connect the dots, ask questions, and show you how these stories still live in Berlin’s streets.

If you’re curious about where it all began, come walk with me.
