Who doesn’t like their beauty sleep?! Shhhhhhh… Kili is our favourite green turtle around Thulusdhoo. Today she was still a bit sleepy and taking a nap near her favourite stone. 🐢 She has grown really big. Did you know green turtles are the second largest species of sea turtles and grow up to weigh over 200kg? Say hi to her here on you next dive trip to the Maldives.

Who am I?!
I live in a small reef structure in the North of Zanzibar/Tanzania, around 15m deep, with a bit of current around. I live for myself (for now) and I like to stay sheltered but at the same time outside to catch my dinner. I have a blueish-purple colour and am about 15cm long. My pectoral fins are very wide and I don’t really swim, I rather sit and walk with them. I am not particularly shy.
Who can help identify this amazing creature we saw yesterday during our dive? From what we researched it is not a weedy scorpionfish (Rhinopia frondosa) or lacey scorpionfish (R. Aphanes). Is it a Rhinopia Eschmeyeri? 🤔🤯🐠👽

They must be the marine rhythmic gymnasts! 🤸‍♂️ 🌊 Juvenile ribbon eels are black with a bright yellow band, and swimming freely they create mesmerising patterns. Characteristic are the wide open mouth and the expanded nostrils. They change colours to become blue when turning into males or bright yellow for females. This one we met while on excursion diving in Nungwi, Zanzibar!
(Rhinomuraena quaesita, IUCN LC)

They are smart cookies! We were so happy (and lucky!) to see two Manta Rays during our last dive! Their brain-to-size ratio is the highest of any cold-blooded fish which makes them very intelligent. They for example create mental maps of their environment. This Reef Manta passed us by against the light, accompanied by a large trevally, leaving all divers exhilarated. What will this majestic huge animal think about us small divers, that blow the strange bubbles?!

We 💙 Eagle Rays! On both sides of the channel, where the current is strong, we regularly see a group of Spotted Eagle Rays. (Aetobatus narinari, IUCN EN). Today we saw four. —Will we see more of them tomorrow?! with
