Last Saturday Jonny and I. guided our annual special Cold War cycling tour.

We had absolutely lovely guests (!), lots of good food (ice cream, bratwurst, beers and fries), and the always perfect combination of history and nature.

In a recent cycling tour we stopped to pay our respects to the victims of Concentration Camp Börnicke.
This camp was what we now call "early" or "wild" camp. It was established rather quickly by the SA in May 1933, The aim of the small camp was to incarcerate political opponents of the N**i Party, while forcing them to manufacture cement.
This camp operated briefly in the gray zone between the democratic laws of the Weimar Republic and the oppression of the N**i dictatorship.
The Prussian court convicted the commandant Heinrich Krein for the r**e of a communist prisoner, but no convictions were made for the murder of 11 more.
The rest of the prisoners were later moved to the bigger SA "wild" camp at Oranienburg.

The Victory Column at Hakenberg is an incredible memorial to the Battle of Fehrbellin, a battle that would alter the course of Prussian history forever!

In early June 1675, the Brandenburg Elector Friedrich Wilhelm the I was fighting along Emperor Leopold, far away from his own Havelland territory that was being invaded by the Swedes.
In less than two weeks he marched 250 km with army, leaving all their wagons behind, only buying supplies from locals along the way.
Brandenburg would go on to win and repel the Swedes, earning Friedrich Wilhelm the name the Great Elector.
This battle would also be the beginning of turning the small principality of Brandenburg-Prussia into the future power house of Europe.

Like its more famous facsimile column in Berlin, this too was built in the 19th Century. Today, it is a beautiful place to stop on a tour between the Brandenburg cities of Nauen and Neuruppin.

Deutche Bahn is not a company famous for being early adopters of innovations. Nevertheless, live long enough in Germany and you will see smart innovations and many improvements.
This new trash bin bottle holder allows homeless people to collect bottles for the recycling (deposit) money without putting their hands deep into the bin.
Whether the innovation is cynical or sincere, the effect may be a very good one.

The Jews of Brandenburg may have been forgotten from our public consciousness. But when you explore this beautiful yet unassuming German state you can still find reminders of more than 350 years of their part in the Prussian history.

This sign, in the historical city of Nauen, marks the location of the local synagogue. The synagogue was built in 1900 and tragically burnt during the November Pogrom of 1938 (more commonly known by its N**i-given name Kristalnacht).

Did you know, Berlin has roughly 180 km (112,5 Miles) of waterways!
These include parts of the rivers Spree, Havel, and Dahme, and several long canals. But exclude some 25-30 city lakes.

So I said: "alright, Let's go for a swim in a lake, and eat fish in bread roll!"
