Obtaining a Visa
Bulgaria is a member of the Schengen Agreement but has not yet fully implemented it. For EU and EFTA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland) citizens, an officially approved ID card (or a passport) is sufficient for entry. In no case will they need a visa for a stay of any length. Others will need a passport for entry.

University of Veliko Turnovo

Program Overview
The University of Veliko Turnovo is one of the major universities in Bulgaria, re-established in 1963. It has 11 colleges: Business Education, Fine Arts, History, Law, Math and Computer Science, Philology, Philosophy, Public Health, Theology, and a Center for Physical Education and Sports. The university has additional campuses in the cities of Vraca and Pleven. The total number of students in Veliko Turnovo is approximately 11,000. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in 64 fields of study. It is fully accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education in Bulgaria. Veliko Turnovo is in northern Bulgaria, 160 miles east of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

The program is designed for students interested in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and to students interested in Balkan Studies. Experience has shown that this offers excellent preparation for students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in ESL, in applying to the Peace Corps, or in seeking employment in the field of international education. The academic program provides immersion in Bulgarian culture and language, as well as the opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an English instructor. Students teach at the university under the supervision of faculty members from the English Department. Students can develop professional teaching skills, and experience Bulgarian life from the perspective of a student as well as a working professional. A 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation are required for admission to this program, which is open to juniors and seniors.

Required documents for Bulgarian student visa application:

Photocopy of Passport valid at least for one yea (the first page of the foreign travel document);
Acceptance letter (certificate stating that the applicant is admitted as a student in Bulgarian university plus the Certificate from the University stating that the applicant will be accommodated in the student hostel);
Medical insurance valid for the EU member states for the whole period of the trip, covering all costs for repatriation and for urgent medical care and emergency hospital treatment for the period of the stay indicated in the visa.
Bank document issued on the name of the applicant to prove that tuition fee has been paid (in generally for half of annually tuition fee).
Colourful photograph 3,5 cm х 4,5 cm against Wight background (the same holds for a child entered in the passport) – a full-face photo with clear, large enough face which takes up 70-80% of the photo; eyes must be red; the following is ineligible: photos with dark glasses; non-professional photos or cut out of amateur photos
Tickets (original and copy) or ticket booking confirmation or financial means
For under-aged children travelling without their parents or trustees the following documents shall be submitted:
a. Copy of the birth certificate
b. Original and photocopy of a power of attorney notary certified by both parents/ trustees or by one parent trustee that they agree their child to travel unaccompanied by them.
Photocopy of the last Bulgarian and Schengen visas or visas for the UK and the US, if any.

Even if visas are not required by visitors from same countries for visit up to 90 days, all students from non-EU / EEA and Switzerland must have entry visa to study in Bulgaria.
