Nzulezu is a unique village in western Ghana, built entirely on stilts above Lake Tadane in the Jomoro District. The name means “surface of water” in the Nzema language. It was founded over 400 years ago by people migrating from the ancient Ghana Empire, guided by a snail—now a sacred symbol.The community lives completely on water, doing everything from schooling to worship on the stilt structures. Thursdays are sacred, and no activity is allowed on the lake that day.Nzulezu is a popular tourist site, accessible only by a canoe ride through the Amansuri Wetland, home to rich wildlife. Visitors must arrive before 3:00 PM, and the village highlights the deep connection between humans and nature.
