There’s something about seeing a performance like this live that just hits differently.

This was in Madrid, and the combination of the music, the staging, and the dancer was incredible to watch.

One of those moments where you forget to look at your phone and just pay attention.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of . It is difficult to imagine the musical world without her voice, her humor, her generosity, and that unmistakable sense of where she came from.

As we have been thinking about her life, one part of her legacy keeps returning to us: the way Dolly understood music as a way for people to find one another.

She once called music “the ambassador of our world.” And throughout her life, she watched that idea become real.

Audiences in Japan who could barely understand her spoken English knew her songs by heart. Musicians in a small pub in Ireland already knew “Coat of Many Colors” when she walked through the door. And “I Will Always Love You,” written from a very personal goodbye, found another extraordinary life through Whitney Houston and eventually belonged emotionally to millions of people.

We wanted to remember Dolly through those stories, and through the remarkable ability she had to make people from completely different places and lives recognize something in one another.

A berimbau is one of those instruments that makes much more sense once you can watch the player at close range.

This demonstration was filmed during a percussion workshop in our March educational music program in Rio. The player is not simply striking the string. Pitch, resonance and attack are being shaped continuously, which is part of why the berimbau can carry so much musical information with such a compact setup.

For student musicians, this is the value of getting beyond a lecture or playlist. Seeing the physical technique changes what you hear afterward.

One thing we try to build into Brazil trips is enough contact with working musicians that the music stops being an abstract part of the itinerary.

This percussion demonstration was filmed during a separate educational program we operated in Rio earlier this year. It is a good example of the kind of learning that happens when a musician can slow something down, demonstrate it physically and let the group hear the difference at close range.

Our December 4–14 Brazil Music & Cultural Tour through Rio, Salvador and Recife includes hands-on music workshops as part of the current itinerary. Exact artists and workshop details can shift with local schedules, but that participatory approach is part of the trip.

The best travel memories are often the moments you could not have manufactured from a checklist.

A musician starts playing and the room changes. Someone explains the history behind a rhythm you have heard for years. A neighborhood suddenly makes more sense because you have heard its music in the place where it grew.

That is the kind of travel we keep trying to build at Musical Getaways: not simply seeing a destination, but finding a way into it through the people who make its culture live.

What is one musical moment from a trip that you still remember?

A music trip does not have to begin with a destination.

Sometimes it begins with a question: What do you want to hear, learn, or get closer to?

We have been building more private journeys around exactly that idea. A favorite musical tradition, a festival you have always wanted to experience, a city whose music you have followed for years, or a trip where the performances matter as much as the landmarks.

How do you find the good live music before you arrive in a city?

A few signs we would pay attention to:

• The venue posts the musicians’ names, not just “live music tonight”
• Local artists tag one another and keep showing up on the same small stages
• The calendar includes different generations and styles, not one tourist-friendly format every night
• People in the comments are talking about the players, not just the drinks or the view
• The venue has a history you can trace beyond its own marketing copy
