A few words for Basel:
The good folk of Basel love Rheinschwimmen and just as it sounds, it involves swimming in the River Rhine.

Regular Rheinschwimmers have all sorts of tricks up their sleeves, including an airtight dry-bag that works as a flotation device – and provides a dry set of clothes afterwards to wear at the next bathing house.

The big swim might sound daunting at first, but a more accurate name for this activity might be ‘Rhein-floating’. The river current all but carries you along. So is this where the term, ‘go with the flow’ originated?

It’s not all beer and skittles in beautiful Bruges – also known as ‘Venice of the North’. There are temptations here that need to be treated with caution, namely the local chocolate, as well as french fries. It appears that there is a chocolatier on every corner and when it comes to deep-fried potatoes, there’s even a museum here dedicated to the ubiquitous chip. You’re standing at the top of Victoria Falls on the Zambia / Zimbabwe border. The rumble of the cascading water is deafening and the plume of spray and mist rises 400 metres into the air (1,300 feet). No wonder local tribes call Victoria Falls ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – the smoke that thunders.

If you’re brave – or a little crazy to be more accurate – you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the ‘Devil’s Pool’. This watering hole is like a natural infinity pool that sits at the very edge of the falls, before the water drops 100 metres to the bottom (330 feet)!

Parisian architecture has always courted controversy. Even the Eiffel Tower was considered an abomination before it was embraced by the people of Paris.

And so it was for the Louvre Pyramid, commissioned in 1983 by French President Francois Mitterand, and designed by Chinese-American architect, I.M. Pei. Parisians were outraged that the project wasn’t assigned locally – and they were ready to riot when they saw the proposals. Mitterand and Pei held their ground and the new museum entrance opened in 1989. With time, Parisians have learnt to love the pyramid– or at least live with it.

More recently, the foyer under the glass pyramid has been redesigned to accommodate increasing visitor numbers. That should keep the Mona Lisa and the museum’s accountants smiling.
