3:00 AM in Basel — and the Old Town is already shoulder to shoulder. It feels like Black Friday, only the crowd carries painted lanterns instead of shopping bags.

It’s the night of Basler Morgenstreich. Fasnächtler weave through the alleys, “Larven” tucked under their arms, hurrying to find their cliques. For months they’ve argued, sketched, painted — deciding which political misstep deserves center stage in this year’s “Sujet.”

At exactly 4:00 AM, the city goes dark. Every light out. You can feel the anticipation tighten.
Then the first piccolo cuts through the silence. Drums answer. Lanterns glow to life and the processions begin, crisscrossing the medieval streets in a choreography that looks spontaneous but runs like clockwork.

No grandstands. No countdown screens. Just Basel, making its sharpest statements before sunrise.

The second Advent week is already halfway through, and with it, the Christmas frenzy is permeating every nook and cranny. Towns like Colmar don't just decorate—they completely transform, turning their medieval squares into themed Christmas districts.

Did you know that the Christian figure of St. Nicholas, celebrated on December 6th in both Germany and northeastern France, is often accompanied in Alsace by a dark folk counterpart named Hans Trapp? His story was allegedly inspired by the real medieval figure Hans von Trotha, a cruel, belligerent 15th-century baron who gradually became a cautionary “bogeyman” in local lore.
