Waldbaden und die unsichtbare Kraft der Bäume

Was passiert eigentlich, wenn wir durch einen Wald gehen?
Ein Spaziergang durch einen Wald fühlt sich anders an als ein Spaziergang durch eine Stadt. Die Luft riecht nach Harz, Holz, feuchter Erde und Blättern. Es ist ruhiger, das Licht verändert sich ständig und mit jedem Schritt scheint der Alltag ein wenig weiter wegzurücken.

Doch möglicherweise ist es nicht nur die Ruhe, die uns im Wald guttut.

Bäume geben ständig winzige Mengen flüchtiger organischer Verbindungen an ihre Umgebung ab. Einige davon gehören zu den sogenannten Phytonziden. Dazu zählen beispielsweise Alpha-Pinen, Beta-Pinen, Limonen und andere Terpene.

Diese Stoffe sind Teil der natürlichen chemischen Kommunikation und Abwehr von Pflanzen. Und genau diese Waldluft interessiert inzwischen auch die Wissenschaft.

Der Duft des Waldes ist mehr als nur ein angenehmer Geruch
Wenn wir durch einen Nadelwald gehen und den typischen Duft von Kiefer, Fichte oder Tanne wahrnehmen, riechen wir unter anderem flüchtige Pflanzenstoffe.

Qing Li und sein Forschungsteam haben untersucht, welche Auswirkungen ein Aufenthalt im Wald auf den Menschen haben kann. In Untersuchungen wurden unter anderem Alpha-Pinen und Beta-Pinen in der Waldluft nachgewiesen, während diese Stoffe in der untersuchten Stadtluft kaum vorhanden waren.

Noch interessanter: Nach Waldaufenthalten wurden Veränderungen bei bestimmten Bestandteilen des menschlichen Immunsystems beobachtet. Dazu gehörte eine erhöhte Aktivität sogenannter Natural Killer Cells, kurz NK-Zellen.

Das bedeutet allerdings nicht, dass ein Waldspaziergang Krebs verhindert oder Krankheiten heilt. Die gemessenen Veränderungen sind biologische Effekte und keine Therapie.

Aber sie zeigen, dass unser Körper offenbar auf die Umgebung reagiert, in der wir uns bewegen.
