Planning an adventure in the Alps? Make it unforgettable AND sustainable. Here's our top tips for responsible hut-to-hut hiking travel:

✨ Look beyond the hotspots: Famous trails are popular for a reason, but the hidden gems nearby often offer the same beauty with fewer crowds. Use maps, guidebooks, and ask locals for off-the-beaten-path suggestions.

🏡 Support local communities: Stay in locally owned guesthouses and homestays for a more authentic (and impactful) experience.

🚆 Travel smart: Trains and public transport in the Alps are not only reliable and scenic, but also a much greener alternative to flying or renting a car.

♻️ Gear up responsibly:The best gear is the gear you already have. Borrow or buy secondhand when possible, and if buying new, choose long-lasting, ethically made items.

🗑️ Tread lightly on the trail – Carry reusable items, pack out your trash, and leave natural spaces better than you found them.

🏔️ Planning on hiking a hut to hut route in the Alps later this summer? Make sure you go prepared with these 5 essential items!

1️⃣ 24-30L Pack: A compact and versatile companion for your journey. It's the perfect size to carry all your essentials without weighing you down.

2️⃣ Trail Runners/Hiking Boots: Your trusty companions for tackling multiple days in the Alps. Make sure to find comfortable footwear with sturdy ankle support and reliable traction.

3️⃣ Trekking Poles: An important piece of gear that will enhance your stability and reduce strain on your joints. They'll provide extra balance and support, especially on challenging uphill and downhill sections.

4️⃣ Sleeping Bag Liner: A lightweight piece of gear that is essential for a cozy night's sleep in the mountain huts. Guests are required to bring a liner when staying in huts.

5️⃣ Ear Plugs: Silence is golden! These tiny heroes will shield you from snoring fellow hikers and any noise disruptions, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful night's sleep.

Remember, while there are many things to pack, these five gear pieces are absolute must-haves for an unforgettable hut to hut experience in the Alps!

"At 55, with knees that aren’t exactly thrilled about hiking downhill, I wasn’t sure I could take on a trek like the Tour of the Vanoise. But when I read that it was considered a relatively manageable trail—even for people with some knee issues—I decided to give it a shot. I trained hard, prepared myself physically, and got more and more excited as the trip approached.

And I’m so glad I went.

The views were beyond anything I expected. From the moment we stepped onto the trail, we were surrounded by the quiet majesty of the Vanoise mountains. The scenery changed constantly, but the beauty never faded—towering peaks, wildflower-filled valleys, and so much wildlife. We saw marmots, ibex, and a few other creatures I had only ever seen in nature documentaries.

The weather was perfect. The sun came out every day, the air was fresh and crisp, and the huts along the way served up the most delicious food. And let me tell you—nothing tastes better than a cold beer after a day on your feet in the mountains.

I hiked with my daughter and my son’s girlfriend, and together we made memories I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. I felt strong, capable, and endlessly grateful. If you're someone who's unsure about doing a multi-day hike because of your knees or your age—don’t count yourself out. The Tour of the Vanoise was the perfect mix of challenge and reward, and I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat."

The mountains may look calm and peaceful from afar—but their beauty comes with a bit of risk. To get the most out of your alpine adventures, it’s important to stay aware and prepared.

Here are a few key safety tips for hiking in the Alps. Because let’s be honest: the best kind of adventure is a safe one.

1️⃣ Signage is more oriented to destinations, rather than trail names or numbers. When hiking, follow signs for the next mountain pass, village, hut, etc., rather than searching for trail names and numbers.

2️⃣ There is an abundance of flowing water, but it needs to be treated. Cows are just about as abundant in the Alps as water. Giardia is not something you want to mess with!

3️⃣ The most dangerous animals you need to worry about are ticks. Make sure to do tick checks and carry tweezers in your first aid kit.

4️⃣ You will be charged for rescue, so make sure you have rescue insurance.

5️⃣ Beware of rockfall when on or near glaciers. Glaciers are rapidly receding in the Alps, which cause safety issues. Do NOT cross below a glacier without seeking local knowledge from a nearby mountain hut or guiding company.

6️⃣ Snowstorms can have a huge impact on visibility. Do not underestimate the impact a snowstorm has on navigation and travel time, regardless of what time of year it is. Snow can happen any time of year.

7️⃣ Summer thunderstorms build slower than in other parts of the world. Once the rain starts, it does not stop for hours. Consult hut staff and local guides on their thoughts about upcoming weather forecasts.

8️⃣ The alpine environment starts at 1800m. Those who spend a lot of time at higher elevations are likely to underestimate conditions at specific elevations in the Alps. 1800m may be the altitude of your tree-covered forests at home, but in the Alps it is the start of the alpine environment and needs to be respected as such.

9️⃣ The emergency phone number for mountain rescue is 112. If you are in danger, hurt, of witness an accident, dial 112.

Early season hiking sounds dreamy—quiet trails, crisp air, and snow-capped peaks. But it comes with risks you need to be ready for.

Here’s what to know before you go 👇

🧊 Snow can linger way longer than you think.
North-facing slopes and shaded gullies can hold snow into July. High passes? Still buried. Conditions vary year to year—so don’t assume a dry trail just because it’s sunny in the valley.

🔍 Trail conditions are hard to predict.
Standard weather apps won’t cut it. Use mountain-specific forecasts, check webcams, and dig through Facebook groups for real-time reports. Mountain huts often know best.

🥾 Snow-covered trails are no joke.
Slippery terrain, hidden holes, and steep traverses can get sketchy fast. Bring hiking poles, walking crampons, and know when to turn around. Mornings can be icy, and descents are trickier than climbs.

⚠️ Watch out for snow bridges + wet avalanches.
That innocent-looking patch might be hiding a stream—or collapse under your feet. And even if the trail is dry, snow from above can release and rush down fast.

If you're heading into the mountains this shoulder season, be smart, go prepared, and check the latest conditions.

📖 We break it all down in our latest blog—head to https://www.alpenventuresunguided.com/early-season/ to learn more!

19/05/2025

Embarking on an adventure in the Alps is not just about conquering peaks, but also about the communal experience of staying in mountain huts. Ensuring a harmonious coexistence with fellow hikers and hut staff involves embracing some key etiquette practices:

1️⃣ Punctuality and Consideration
Make sure to arrive at the huts before 5pm. In case delays are unavoidable, a simple courtesy call to inform the hut staff of your late arrival goes a long way.

2️⃣ Quiet Hours
Many mountain huts have designated quiet hours. Mindfulness during arrival and departure, especially during these hours, creates an environment where everyone feels respected.

3️⃣ Trash Management
While mountain huts often provide trash cans, it's essential to carry your own waste, as these remote locations face logistical challenges. The provided bins are exclusively for items purchased at the hut.

4️⃣ Supporting the Hut
When taking advantage of the communal kitchen facilities to cook your meal, consider ordering a drink or two. This gesture supports the hut manager, whose earnings often come from food and drink sales.

5️⃣ Timely Payments & Morning Departures
Paying your bill before bedtime, unless the hut specifies a different time, streamlines operations and ensures a seamless departure in the morning. An early departure not only allows hut staff to prepare for new arrivals but also gives you a chance to experience the quiet mountain mornings.

6️⃣ Water Usage
Conscious water consumption is crucial in mountain huts, where water sources may be limited. Confirming the potability of water with hut staff and understanding the circumstances during dry periods is essential.

7️⃣ Dietary Considerations
If you have dietary restrictions, communicating them in advance during the booking process is key. While huts strive to accommodate, understanding the limitations of their kitchens, especially regarding cross-contamination, helps manage expectations.

By embracing these nuanced aspects of mountain hut etiquette, you not only enhance your own experience but contribute to the positive and sustainable functioning of these remote alpine havens.

"Hiking with my mom and one of my closest friends was an experience I'll never forget.

What made it even more special was watching my mom step into something I’ve always loved—hiking—and completely embrace it. Seeing her push past her comfort zone, soak in the beauty of the mountains, and fall in love with the simple moments on trail was incredibly inspiring.

Would I do the Tour of the Vanoise again? Hands down."

Hut Life on the Tour of the Vanoise 🏔️🇫🇷

The huts along the Tour of the Vanoise aren’t just places to sleep—they’re the heart of the experience. Each one is nestled deep in the French Alps, far from the buzz of daily life. You might find yourself perched beside a glacier, next to a thundering waterfall, or in a wide-open alpine basin where the only sounds are cowbells and birdsong.

Refuge de Plan-Sec is a crowd favourite for good reason. Cozy and rustic, it's the quintessential mountain hut: hearty home-cooked meals, a friendly welcome, and a porch that looks down over a string of alpine lakes. It’s the kind of place where you sip a crisp beer and watch the cows graze below, their bells echoing softly through the valley.

Most hikers here are French, which makes for a truly immersive alpine experience—shared meals, clinking cutlery, and casual conversations in mountain French, all while surrounded by peaks and sky.

Meet Tim, one of our Adventure Planning Experts here at Alpenventures UNGUIDED! 👋

Originally from Alberta, Canada, Tim grew up near the Rocky Mountains before moving to Scotland and eventually settling in Germany. His love for the outdoors runs deep—whether it’s hiking, climbing, snowboarding, or ski touring, he’s happiest when surrounded by peaks.

As a Qualified UIMLA International Mountain Leader, Tim has spent years guiding others through the Alps on many of the very tours we offer. He brings a wealth of real-world mountain experience to our team, making him a go-to for crafting memorable, safe, and inspiring itineraries.

Though he enjoys all forms of mountain travel, Tim is especially passionate about skiing and mountaineering. One of his most memorable adventures? Summiting Mont Blanc via the Trois Monts Route.

Tim also has a soft spot for mountain huts. Having spent countless nights guiding from hut to hut, he believes it’s not about how fancy a hut is—it’s about the people you meet along the way. His current favorite? Cabane de Moiry for its breathtaking views and welcoming staff—but he’s always chasing the thrill of discovering a new one.

TOUR OF THE MONTH: TOUR OF THE VANOISE 🇫🇷

Tucked away in a dramatic corner of the French Alps, near the Swiss border and well away from the tourist crowds of Mont Blanc, the Tour of the Vanoise offers a peaceful, high-alpine escape for hikers craving natural beauty without the knee-busting climbs.

This hut-to-hut route winds through the heart of France’s first national park, rarely dipping into valleys, and stays comfortably elevated throughout—ideal for those seeking mellow grades and minimal exposure. If you’ve struggled with steep descents or long days of relentless elevation, this might be your perfect alpine adventure.

What makes the Tour of the Vanoise stand out?

🏔️ Effortless Alpine Beauty: Big mountain views with surprisingly little daily elevation gain/loss.

🏔️ A True Alpine Experience: Stay in charming French huts with shared rooms, friendly staff, and picnic lunches that are several grades above the standard.

🏔️ Immersive Nature: The trail never strays from the national park and passes through only one village—keeping you wrapped in nature the entire time.

🏔️ Quieter Trails: Popular with French hikers, but much less busy than the Tour du Mont Blanc or Alta Via 1.

🏔️ Wildlife Encounters: Marmots, ibex, and golden eagles are often spotted along the route.

For those chasing quiet trails, breathtaking scenery, and a gentler hiking experience, the Tour of the Vanoise delivers in every way.
