A Munich icon in the heart of the English Garden. But what is the history behind it?

It was originally built as a viewing platform for the English Garden, the tower was constructed by two local master carpenters.

Chinese-inspired architecture was all the rage among European aristocrats, and the Great Pagoda in London’s Kew Gardens served as the model for the tower in Munich.

In the year 1807 Garden architect Ludwig von Sckell took over the Garden and aimed for a classicist look and tried to tear the tower down.

Spoiler: The tower survived.

Today, Sckell is mostly known as the mastermind behind the park of Nymphenburg Palace.

The 25-meter-high wooden tower burned down during the war but was rebuilt in the 1950s. Sadly, it can’t be used today as the viewing platform it was originally intended to be due to security concerns.

Nowadays, it is mostly known as the picturesque backdrop to its neighboring beer garden and as the location of the traditional Kocherlball.

Karl Valentin was a German comedian and actor active during the first half of the 20th century. He is widely regarded as one of Germany’s most unique and beloved stage and film artists from that era.

He was born in Munich, so it only makes sense that he is remembered here in the city in a museum that is keeping his spirit and wild ideas alive.

King Ludwig II is known as the Fairy Tale King behind some of the world’s most lavish palaces. Yet he built almost nothing in his own capital. The only structure he commissioned there, a winter garden on top of his royal residence, did not survive and nearly destroyed the residence.
