Am Samstag ist Brauertag in München!
Der findet nur alle zwei Jahre statt. Ein Höhepunkt auf dem Marienplatz ist die öffentliche „Freisprechung“ der Jungbrauer.
Bei der feierlichen Zeremonie auf den Marienplatz werden sie vom Oberbürgermeister zum Abschluss ihrer Lehrzeit geehrt, um anschließend nach alter Stadttradition feierlich „frei geschlagen“ zu werden.
Dabei leisten die ausgelernten Jungbrauer nochmals den „Preueid“, mit dem sie sich dem Münchner Reinheitsgebot von 1487 verpflichten.
Die im Mittelalter begründete Zunft- und Stadttradition wird damit lebendig weitergeführt!

Bonus fun fact: As the Mariensäule is an altar, it can also be used to celebrate Holy Mass and has been visited by Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.

Maypoles are found throughout Europe, and their meaning varies between cultures, even within Germany. In Bavaria, they serve as a celebration of the local community and showcase the traditions, crafts, and industries associated with the region where the maypole stands.

Local legend claims that the Munich cathedral, also known as Frauenkirche, was built with the help of the devil. The devil offered his help to the young architect Jörg von Halspach, but in return the church was not allowed to have any windows. The devil thought that if the church was dark, no one would visit and that humans would waste their resources and time on building such a monumental church that would never be used.

But when the church was done and the devil came to visit, he saw that there was still light in the church, even though he couldn’t see any windows from the point where he was standing. He had been tricked and stomped his feet into the ground, so that to this day you can still see the devil’s footprint in the church entrance.
