Schuhplattler at the Passauer Herbstdult. This festival is similar to the more famous Oktoberfest in Munich but much smaller and WAY less touristy. There seems like there is a festival for everything.

Laurin, a restaurant right in the Viktualienmarkt in Munich features the cuisine of Südtirol - the northern Italian region that shares Austrian and Italian culture and you can see it in the food. There are Knödel(dumplings) alongside fresh pasta and ravioli-like pasta with a German name, Schlutzkrapfen.

The food here was amazing! We loved the ambience and the service here. The wine list and great and features many Italian wines from Alto Adige and beyond as well as some Austrian varietals. If you’re in Munich and want something a little different, give it a try!

🇩🇪 3 things we love about Germany and 1 we don’t! ⁣

✅ Grocery prices — groceries cost a fraction of what we paid in the U.S. It still surprises us when we checkout! ⁣

✅ Public transport — you can get almost anywhere without a car! Hiking paths, towns nearby, another country. ⁣

✅ Driving culture — calmer roads, way more respect, zero road rage. It’s so much less stressful driving here! ⁣

❌ The lack of convenience — stores close early during the week and aren’t open on Sundays so there isn’t much available afterwards if you need something. We had zero bandages when we moved, I cut my finger on a Sunday, and not even the gas station had any. Luckily it wasn’t that bad! ⁣

After hiking through the Partnachklamm (Partnach Gorge) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and making your way up into the hills, you’re rewarded with some spectacular scenery. 🏔️🥾

Cows with ringing bells graze in the alpine meadows, surrounded by incredible views of the Bavarian Alps. 🐄🔔 It’s one of those scenes that feels almost too perfectly Bavarian to be real.

At the end of the hike, a handful of mountain restaurants are waiting with traditional Bavarian food and cold beer. 🍺🥨

And on this particular day, the weather couldn’t have been better. ☀️🇩🇪

Staying in the heart of Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the Bavarian Alps surrounding you is pretty hard to beat. 🏔️🇩🇪

We just stayed at the ATLAS Posthotel, right on Marienplatz in the center of Garmisch, and it turned out to be an amazing base for exploring the area. Check it out here 👇

🏨 The location is hard to beat. Only steps away from the pedestrian zone filled with restaurants, cafes, shopping, and more. The Zugspitze, Eibsee and Partnachklamm are all easy to reach by bus from here.

🥐 And the breakfast was amazing!

A big German breakfast is always a good way to start the day, and the spread here did not disappoint. Plenty of fresh breads and rolls, meats, cheeses, eggs, fruit and vegetables, and all the things you want before heading out for a day in the mountains.

The hotel itself is in an old historic building. The dining room is over 400 years old! There is this amazing old wooden bar in the back of the dining room. It doesn’t seem like it’s used anymore sadly, but you can imagine it being popular back in the day.

If you’re planning a trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and want mountain views, a great breakfast and a location where you can walk almost everywhere, the ATLAS Posthotel is definitely one to put on your list.
