Bahnhof Rieder was built in 1891 and has, for years on end, been used as a trainstation. In the beginning of 2000, the Deutsche Bahn started selling old, unused or financially unattractive stations. We were lucky enough to be able to buy this station. In 2009 we saw an advertisement on Marktplaats (a Dutch kind of Ebay) where the building was for sale. We picked a weekend and drove the almost 500
km to Rieder. We fell in love with the building, even though it had graffiti all over and fires had broken down great parts of it. Because of the rain and snow and the lack of roof, plants had grown inside. Still, the building looked majestic and strong, and, to be honest, we liked a bit of adventure. We have had craftsmen from around Rieder to help us get it back in the original state. At the moment (beginning 2016) the main building is finished. There are 3 floors with each a separate entrance, but the building can be used as a whole as well. Each floor has a bathroom and kitchen. And each floor has a baby bed available. The groundfloor has it's entrance in the courtyard. It consist of a kitchen with a door to a bathroom and a door to the living- and bed-room. You sleep in the back, you can sit in the front (or outside of course). The middle floor has it's entrance on the platform. You enter the living/bedroom and there is a door to the kitchen. Next to the kitchen is a bathroom, with a washing machine and dryer as well. The top floor has it's entrance in the courtyard as well. Same main door as the ground floor, but in the hallway, you have an extra locked door, to get up. This top floor is not wheelchair accessible, the middle floor and groundfloor are. The fourth apartment, the small buildings to left, is still under construction. The costs for one week are €250,- per floor. To give you an idea: we (family: mom, dad, 2 small boys) sleep on the same floor, togerther in the same room)
