International appeal: Rothenburg ob der Tauber named one of the world’s most beautiful small towns ✨
Rothenburg ob der Tauber has been named one of the 20 Most Beautiful Towns in the World by the renowned international travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller.
The historic Bavarian town is the only destination in Germany featured in the current selection, alongside international destinations such as Praiano on the Amalfi Coast, Bled in Slovenia and Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland.
The recognition is particularly significant for Rothenburg: Condé Nast Traveller is one of the world’s most influential travel magazines, reaching an international audience of travel enthusiasts through its editorial recommendations. Its selection highlights places that combine history, architecture and outstanding landscapes – qualities that perfectly capture Rothenburg’s unique appeal.
With its almost completely preserved medieval Old Town, half-timbered houses, winding lanes and historic town walls, Rothenburg offers an extraordinary cityscape overlooking the Tauber Valley. The world-famous Plönlein is just one of the many iconic views that have made Rothenburg an internationally renowned destination. Condé Nast Traveller also highlights the town’s medieval character and its distinctive fairytale atmosphere.
The latest recognition adds to a growing list of international recommendations for Rothenburg. In late 2025, Condé Nast Traveller had already named Rothenburg one of the 17 most beautiful towns in Germany.
“We are particularly delighted that Rothenburg is now the only German destination included in a worldwide selection of the most beautiful small towns,” says Lord Mayor Christoph Rösch. “The recognition shows that our historic townscape has an exceptional international appeal. At the same time, we see it as an encouragement to preserve this unique heritage while continuing to develop Rothenburg as a vibrant city and sustainable destination.”
