Sea turtle nesting season has begun along Angola’s Atlantic Coast 🐢 🌊

Angola is one of the most important nesting areas for Olive ridley turtles in the eastern Atlantic. From now until early next year, female turtles will come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand.

More than five million hatchlings have reached the sea since 2003, and this is down to the continued conservation efforts of The Kitabanga Project, which has been protecting nesting beaches for more than 20 years. Since the project began, more than 50,000 nests have been protected and more than five million hatchlings have reached the sea. During the last nesting season alone, teams operated at 20 locations along 118 kilometres of coastline.

Leatherback and green turtles also nest along the coast, although in smaller numbers.

The team at behind Opposite Lock’s new documentary series know all too well!

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what happens when you venture deep into the arid landscapes of Iona National Park, where vast desert meets dramatic mountains, wildlife and some of Angola’s most untouched wilderness.

This is what adventure looks like in southwest Angola 🇦🇴

The latest episode of Opposite Lock Africa’s journey through Angola takes us deep into the country’s southwest, from the dramatic landscapes of Lubango to the wild coastline of Iona National Park.

Their journey includes taking in spectacular views across Tundavala Gap, Cristo Rei (Christ the King) and the Serra da Leba pass, before travelling owards to Moçâmedes to navigate vast desert landscapes of Iona National Park and the emote rugged landscapes of Lagoa dos Arcos and Colinas do Curoca.

This week, Angolan feature film ‘Meu Semba’ will be screened at Afrika Film Festival in Koln 🍿 🇦🇴

Meu Semba (My Semba) follows the story of a young man’s journey into adulthood, set against the vibrant rhythms, realities and challenges of Luanda.

The screening in Koln follows a busy few months of appearances and award nominations at film festivals accross Europe, including Munich International Film Festival and Venice International Film Festival.

Director, Hugo Salvaterra, will proudly present ‘My Semba’ at the Afrika Film Festival in Koln, and will be joined by Co-Founder of production company Geração 80, Jorge Cohen.

New documentary follows an unforgettable journey into Angola’s incredible, little-explored landscapes 🏜️ 🇦🇴

A new three-part documentary series is taking viewers off the beaten track and into some of Angola’s least-travelled and most extraordinary landscapes.

From the sacred highlands of Lubango to the vast, arid coastline of Iona National Park in the Namib Desert, the series offers a unique perspective on exploring and overlanding through some of the country’s most remote and remarkable environments.

Supported by Opposite Lock Africa and African Parks, and filmed by Basement Films, the documentary also shines a light on the vital conservation and community efforts taking place across these landscapes, alongside the importance of sustainable tourism in helping to protect them for generations to come.

The first episode airs 20 September on Opposite Lock Africa’s YouTube channel.
