In SLETH’s proposal for the renewal of Blåvand’s town centre, nature and cultural heritage are the premise of the project’s design principles.
The project draws on Blåvand’s unique coastal landscape and long-standing building traditions to create an urban space that connects the town with its rich natural and cultural past. Robust strategies and thoughtful elements strengthen the ties between the town center, the dunes, and historical architecture, creating new coherence and meaning in Blåvand.
Principles for plantings and greenery are rooted in detailed studies of the local heathland ecosystem. The new urban nature emerges from this knowledge, with carefully selected native species that reflect the biodiversity of the surrounding dune and heath landscape. The result is a resilient, living townscape that evolves alongside natural processes and climate change, creating an urban environment where people and nature grow together.
Similarly, the paving principles are based on local building heritage. Inspired by brick and granite foundations found in churches and coastal farms, and the marine deposits that have shaped the area over 8000 years, the surface design features small, sand-colored concrete tiles combined with reused granite and hard-fired bricks turning red. These tactile, weather-resistant materials form a durable and visually rich paving pattern that becomes the new ground of Blåvand, as a solid and beautiful base that ties the urban spaces together and supports everyday life.
