In SLETH’s proposal for the renewal of Blåvand’s town centre, nature and cultural heritage are the premise of the project’s design principles.

The project draws on Blåvand’s unique coastal landscape and long-standing building traditions to create an urban space that connects the town with its rich natural and cultural past. Robust strategies and thoughtful elements strengthen the ties between the town center, the dunes, and historical architecture, creating new coherence and meaning in Blåvand.

Principles for plantings and greenery are rooted in detailed studies of the local heathland ecosystem. The new urban nature emerges from this knowledge, with carefully selected native species that reflect the biodiversity of the surrounding dune and heath landscape. The result is a resilient, living townscape that evolves alongside natural processes and climate change, creating an urban environment where people and nature grow together.

Similarly, the paving principles are based on local building heritage. Inspired by brick and granite foundations found in churches and coastal farms, and the marine deposits that have shaped the area over 8000 years, the surface design features small, sand-colored concrete tiles combined with reused granite and hard-fired bricks turning red. These tactile, weather-resistant materials form a durable and visually rich paving pattern that becomes the new ground of Blåvand, as a solid and beautiful base that ties the urban spaces together and supports everyday life.

As part of SLETH’s proposal for the renewal of Blåvand town centre, new initiatives pave the way for a more beautiful, accessible, and nature-connected urban space.

A new playground, “after the storm”, brings natural wild forces into the town centre. Designed in steel and wood elements, with golden sand-coloured surfaces, the landscape is shaped into dramatic dunes and hills. Children can explore mysterious spaces left in the wake of a storm, where winding water trails, broken branches, hidden caves, and seashells washed ashore form a dynamic space of imagination, learning, and play.

Additionally, the project proposes innovative solutions to handle rainfall. Instead of relying on traditional drainage systems, the project introduces new ways to handle both everyday rainfall and future climate challenges. Based on analyses of 5-, 10-, and 50-year rain events, the design integrates sustainable stormwater solutions that prepare the area for a changing climate.

Essential for the renewal of Blåvand is an improvement of the current traffic and parking system. The project initiates a new system, making existing, centrally located parking areas more easily accessible, while freeing up more space for city life. This allows the town centre to become more pedestrian-friendly and closely linked to the surrounding landscape.

These initiatives are part of a larger vision to make Blåvand’s town centre more vibrant, resilient, and rooted in nature.

We are happy to share that our proposal for the renewal of Blåvand has been politically approved!

In collaboration with Skaarup Landskab, Fuldendt Rådgivende Ingeniører and Trafikplan Rådgivende Ingeniørfirma, SLETH has developed a proposal for the renewal of Blåvand’s town centre. The goal is to create a more beautiful, greener, and better-functioning centre, rooted in the surrounding landscape and architectural heritage.

Elaborating on a traffic- and masterplan we have previously developed for Blåvand, the project enhances key principles with a focus on stronger connections to nature and an improved town centre. A new traffic and parking strategy is essential to enhance both the aesthetic and functional qualities of Blåvand’s public spaces, with a strong focus on bringing nature closer and improving recreational spaces.

The proposed solution is simple and effective, by retaining and improving access to the centrally located parking areas, while cars are given slightly less space, a livelier urban environment in close connection to its surrounding landscape is made possible.

The project aims to give Blåvand’s town centre a distinct identity and strengthening the connection between nature, urban life and heritage.

The project is supported by Realdania and Varde Municipality.

The study trip inspired us to revisit the archives and delve into our own project proposal for Thomas B. Thriges Gade from 2011.

SLETH’s proposal "Odense Overgang" was rooted in a deep understanding of the city as a living, evolving whole. We focused on the potentials and new connections that could emerge and create a new urban dynamo. The aim was to strengthen the unique character of Odense and transform Thomas B. Thriges Gade into a coherent urban landscape with vibrant city life.

On our study trips, we always visit new inspiring projects. Last week's trip to Odense gave us the opportunity to experience 's Oluf Bagers Plads and Byfællesskabet, a part of the transformation of Thomas B. Thriges Gade.

We took a walk through the urban square, admired the two new brick buildings and explored the green landscape surrounding Byfællesskabet.

Today, I, Mathilde, would like to share a bit about what I’m working on as an intern

For the past month, I’ve been working on the research project ‘Genbrug på matriklen’, led by Lotte Bjerregaard Jensen and Peer Tue Näthke from . The site is located near Listefabrikken in Åbyhøj, where we are exploring the potential for new residential units – all built entirely from materials found on-site.

SF stones, used in pavement, are a recurring element in the area. These industrially produced concrete modules are often seen as purely functional, without significant aesthetic value – just a pattern in the streetscape. I’m experimenting with using SF stones as architectural modules – for example in facades – and looking at how repetition, scaling, or transformation can turn them into a defining motif.

I’ve primarily worked with SF stones and red bricks as decorative elements in new facades. The site also contains several large glulam beams that will be incorporated into the construction, along with other timber that is being converted into new beams and used as structural components in floor slabs.

Besides this project, I’m also part of a competition project – which I unfortunately can’t share more about just yet

This week, we’re giving you a glimpse into what it’s like to be an intern at SLETH

We’re Jens Petur and Mathilde, both 6th-semester students at Aarhus School of Architecture. We’ve both been following the teaching program Habitation, where we’ve mainly worked on designing new architecture – though in our bachelor projects, we also explored transformation.

One of the best things about being an intern at SLETH is being involved in a variety of exciting projects. Our tasks range widely – from model making, 3D modeling, renderings, and collages to 2D drawings. We also participate in meetings and go on site visits – giving us a solid understanding of what it means to work as an architect.

Another great aspect is being part of a team of kind and talented people from whom we’re constantly learning!

A trip into the field

Last week, we participated in an educational day hosted by BG Byggros, Kortegaards Planteskole and Grønt Aftryk, gathering Danish landscape architects. We explored the role of urban greenery and the value of trees in the city. Later, we went into the field to explore how healthy, resilient trees are cultivated and how they contribute to greener, more vibrant cities.
